Private purchases from Canada.

I am hoping to get the first 7 Tarbell books for about £40-£50 in total,
( secondhand), plus shipping charges.

They will be from a private "indivdual" ( not the "private purcheses you were thinking  )rather than from a business.

Do you get charged by customs on books? as I believe they are exempt from VAT.

Hope it comes off, as I think it will be the bargain of the year. Doesn't matter to me if they are secondhand, as I'm going to use them, not hang them on the wall!

I have done a search, but couldn't find anything that related to books, or from buying from an individual, rather than from a business.

As far as I know, books are zero rated for UK VAT but the seller needs to make sure the customs declaration on the parcel crearly shows that they are books. Some suppliers also put 'gift' on the declaration which isn't strictly true but also helps minimise any additonal costs.

Thanks Mandrake, just hoping it comes off now. Getting the Tarbell series is long overdue.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

I spent several hours yesterday and today trying to convince Parcel Force that the box of goods they were expecting us to pay ridiculously high import duty on contained zero rated 'Gear Trains' (aka cogs!) rather than ‘Gear Trainers' (aka posh footwear) which attract over 10% duty.

Parcel Force don't do their own import duty assessment and calculations like freight companies do, they have a department of Customs & Excise in their buildings doing the work for them. As a result they're scared witless (I think that' the word) to disagree and under no circumstances can they change things even when the assessment is wrong. At the moment I'm dealing with a very helpful person in C&E and it looks like we're getting somewhere but it means our urgent goods are being withheld for another week or so. Customer consideration is way down the list of concerns so Parcel Force are off my Christmas Card list at the moment  !

The problems you get with the post office are that they charge a handling fee to open up the boxes on your behalf to decide what is inside.

What you need to do sometimes when ordering of companies, or individuals, is get them to mark the boxes EXACTLY what is inside of them. They also need the correct paperwork.

Not everything is checked however.

but this is the important bit IN NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD GOODS BE SENT TO THIS COUNTRY MARKED AS 'GIFT' WHEN THEY ARE PURCHASED ITEMS!

Until recently (stopped because i got too busy) i had a business and traded on ebay internationally. as such i looked into the international thing. If you receive goods marked as gift and they are not (and believe it or not, customs can tell the difference and are well up to speed on the types of items that are not a gift) then you will be done for illegal imports. If they pick you up that is! And you still get charged the handling charge and VAT. Its just not worth it.

Chinese electronics are the worst offenders because they think that they are helping you! Its not however the overseas companies who get the bill at the end of the day.

From what I can understand, the category of gift is an item which is being sent to a family member and will be for their soul use. Anything else isn't.

Finally, if you want to send things to other countries do check out their import duties. You can't send anything of an agricultural source (soil, plants etc) outside of the EU.

And you can't send clothes to Australia

The rules change constantly, so be aware!

Came on the 10th. They were written up as second hand books so I had no charges to pay. Thanks again for advising to do this.
