Classic Magic Routines - What Are They?

Postby Zanoni » Jun 23rd, '06, 04:09

Hello,
I am putting together a small parlour Classic Magic Act. I am trying to find magic routines that would have been popular in the 18th & 19th century period.

The ones I think fit this bill would be:
Cups & Balls
Linking Rings
Zombie (maybe?)

But I need your input for others for this time period. Any help would be appreciated. Please remember that I need Parlour not Stage routines.

Thanks in advance.

Parlour magic was something Max Malini ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Malini ) specialised in. Even when he did it in hotels the setting was that of a Parlour. Most of his magic was close up and simple using cards, coins, buttons, borrowed cigarettes etc. He'd also produce a large block of ice from a borrowed hat. Dai Vernon wrote an excellent book Malini And His Magic' and that has lots of ideas and routines in it.

I may have the wrong timescale in mind but wouldn't there also be quite a bit of séance type magic? Psychics, spirit cabinets etc?

basicly its a ring that is threaded onto a rope and visibly jumps off and on the rope similar to sankeys key in some of the moves.

pm'd you.

dear Zanoni,

Is this Zanoni the Chinese magician who has been around a long time?...do you remember "Lilith" from the "Magickal Ark" back in the late 80s? Well, this is I; I certainly remember YOU; we used to call you "the Iceman" as a joke. I thought of you and wondered if you were still around, so I looked you up on Google, and found this site! You can contact me at sephirah5@yahoo.com; I don't live in TO anymore, but I am usually there at least once a week, why not let's do lunch sometime, and catch up!
