UPLOADING A WEB

Postby dat8962 » Jun 23rd, '06, 22:47

I suppose that this is best in this section as it's support that I'm after

Anyway.... I've just created myself a web site using MS Front Page (2002) and it's now ready to publish.

I'm with ntlWorld and have 55mb of free web space but for some reason I can't upload my web, despite having the settings. Can anyone offer any advice or should I forget ntl world and host it somewhere else?

All help appreciated.

ntl's instructions are on their web site at http://ntlworld.com/toolsservices/webspace/index.php but can I make sense of them

Edit: NO PROBLEMS, are you using FTP software to upload or do you have something like netfusion?

I think that Front Page help tells you how to do it. You just have to enter some information or something. That's as much as I can remember about it I'm afraid :? But yeah have a look at the Front Page help.

Dat

Just enter your information into whatever you are using to upload your website

Your FTP software should have a section to enter this information below:

Homepage: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/user.name
FTP upload address: upload.ntlworld.com
User name: your ntl internet username, e.g. user.name
Password: your ntl internet password, e.g. s123456789

You should now be able to upload.

I hope that helps a bit!

I've got the FrontPage Quick Course book from MS Press and it's covered in Chapter 3

It states that the upload server must have MS Front Page Server Extensions but I can;t find any reference on the ntl Web site. I may have to phone for tech support.

In page view I select publish web from the file menu and I follow the instruction, entering http://upload.ntlworld.com

I get an error message saying unable to open http://upload.ntlworld.com - server error
possible causes:
server may not have Front Page server exts
server may be temporarily out of service
If you are connecting through a proxy server (I'm not)
An error may have occurred in the web server

If this server does not support FrontPage Server Exts, FrontPage may still be able to the server via FTP.

Does anyone know how I publish via FTP?

http://www.smartftp.com/
this is a good FTP coffecup is another good one but can't find site.

Basically is should be the sort of the same. Save the web in HTML format and when you open the FTP you will be given the same options;

Homepage
FTP upload address
User name
Password

The site I have posted about also has a support Tutorials and a Forum.

If the company has their own ftp software, i would download that first. Most FTP simply require you to enter the info in my post above. You then select files to upload. and press 'upload'

AJ - say that again in English????

ntl has their own software called terrapin but it's a but vague to me as to whether I will need to start again or it it will let me update the Front Page created web as it is - and it's £20. I wish that I understood more about the protocols.

I have a copy of Web User magazine and am wondering if it would be easier to find a hosting service that has the extensions needed and will just let me upload the web directly? The prices that I see are basically the same as buying Terrapin so it's the route with the least hassle which is?????

I do appreciate all of your help - thanks

Aj said the same as me! the problem is that it is harder to explain then exactly do! you really need to be sitting at the persons computer showing it to them. Basically AJ said to save each page as an html document. If you wanted to spend a bit more then you could go with another host that has a website creator built in. My sites are with www.bravenet.com and www.oneandone.co.uk. Both are good to use. Hope you get sorted soon and i look forward to seeing your website.

Sorry Dat as stephen said its easier to do than say. Bravenet are good and they have a lot of extras like maps and guestbooks and so on.

Terrapin, thats the one I could not for the life of me think of the name. Not too keen on it, but that is just me.

Don't give up with NTL, you pay them enough for the internet connection so should be able to take advantage of the webspace. Possibly phone their tech helpline.

Good luck

Front page extensions aren't standard with most servers, however, you possibly don't need them.

A straight FTP upload should work.

I have a couple of clients who use Frontpage to edit their own 'news' section, and I've not given them Frontpage access on their server (cos I hate it, spit!) and they do it fine. I'll ask some questions.
