Aussie Magic!

Postby AndyRegs » Jan 21st, '05, 23:54

Hey all,
Well, I have just packed up my job as a teacher (way too stressful!) and are soon to head off to Australia with my fiance, to work around the country on ranches. Yep, gonna be a cowboy...Yee HA!
We will have internet access, so will keep frequenting these pages. Though I was wondering whether there are any Aussies on this site, or anyone who has been to australia, who can recommend a good magic distributer, name any magicians worth keeping an eye out for over there, and just share any info about whether there is much of a magic 'scene' down there?

First of all, best of luck with your new lifestyle! My youngest son did 2 years in Oz on a working visa and he'd go back there like a shot given half a chance. We went to visit him at the time and I spent a small forune at a shop in Melbourne called Bernard's Magic, 211 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne 3000, Victoria - Tel 030 9670 9270, Fax: 03 9600 4545. That was 4 years ago so they may not still be there but a Google search will show quite a few Magic suppliers in Oz. Not sure about live magic but, as there are about 9 pubs to the square yard in the big cities, I'd guess there are plenty of opportunity for an enterprising magish to amaze folks down under!

BTW, in OZ I had up to now only ever seen bridge sized decks. But magic shops like http://www.themagicstore.com.au/
seem to sell poker decks! Does anyone find this strange?

You might be OK on the points system if you are a teacher - they are in demand here although more in the rural areas I would think.

PM if you have any questions - my wife is a primary teacher here in Sydney

Cheers
