Apparently, if you get a thin enough needle like the one for "needle through balloon," you can really push it right through without damage.

I just took his word for it because...

I AM NOT GOING TO TRY THAT!

It suspect that the guy on another forum, was me.
now i have looked into this a little more since i posted. yes, it was real, however, the needle wasnt just a straight solid one. It was an accupuncture needle, which, are hollow, and have a shape to their end. these dont pierce the skin, but cut a channel throught the flesh.
this means little, or no pain.
if you had a piercing done, this is the type of implement the piercer would use.the initial pain being going through the outer layer of the skin.
this added to choosing a place with little or no nerve endings makes this possible. However, you would still have to be a complete idiot to try it.!!
I think i will stick to cards for now. 8)

Sounds pretty sick. To be honest I am more interested in Derren Browns needle trick with the Med students. Any ideas.

there again, this is done for real.
Its published by anneman, i think its part of his Yogi routine, and relys on the fact that, there are no blood vessels or nerve endings on the particular bit of the back of the hand that derren chose to impale.
You can check this yourself. if you pinch a piece of flesh at the knuckle, you wont feel it.
and as for the hole dissapearing, thanks to the elasticity of the skin, it naturaly closes.

The use of a medical student was inspired, because naturaly part of their training, will be in giving injections.
it just takes nerve.( or in this case the lack of them :) )

further thought about this effect, reminds me that , at school we had a biology lesson, in which we had to touch the left arm in different places , with a pin.
many parts of the arm have no nerve endings, these places often used by doctors to adninister injections.
now, the bit before , the tooth ache.
you wouldnt believe how that may of been done.
i have had somebody do it to me!
and the person is not a magician, or a doctor. He studdies a particular martial art that , relies on touching pressure points that run through the body.
Touch the right combination, and bingo!!!. Tooth ache.

You can do this on just about any part of the hand or arm, if yuo notice, Derren pinches the skin quite hard when he pushes the needle through, which numbs the surround ing skin a bit. This is quite a common bit with stage hypnotists, so it has to be eay to do and work on anyone!

 its a part of ninjistsu and kempo and has a sister art normaly called acupressure

incidently the nearve cluster in the fleshy part of the thumb and index finger with corect pressure can cause takacardia (fast heart beat), which used to be used be stooges in seances to increase the suggestability of subjects.

a form of the electric chair uses this same principle of accupressure :?:

the vulcan nearve grip does not work but when aplied to both sides of the traps mussel can seriousely reduce blood flow to the brain as well as cause the intercostal mussels in the chest wall to spasm makeing breathing difficult, i know from my earlier days as a martial artist.
im to old and slow for it to be any use now.

I saw some Martial artist on tv doing pressure point stuff. One of them did a gentle leg kick to anothers calf mussle and
the guy was out cold! He rolled him over bent his leg up behind his back and the guy woke up! Was rather funny really.

If the starter of this thread is still interested, you can purchase Through And Through by Dan Hauss through Paper Crane Magic. It teaches you how to shove a needle through your hand. The very best of luck to you, see you in A & E.

The skin on the back of the hand is very loose and surprisingly insensitive. (I had a big lump ripped right off the back of my hand by a dog bite, and it barely hurt. Well, until they put iodine on it.)

If you pinch the skin right up away from the hand and use a thin, very sharp needle, it won't bleed and won't hurt much. No worse than sticking yourself with a needle, anyway. Up to you to decide whether that amount of pain is worth the spectacle.

Pinching very hard before inserting the needle will make the sensation even duller.

The toothache effect is basic hypnosis. It's fairly easy to get people to feel toothache by suggestion. DB also used it in that routine to judge who would be the best subject to take further with the needle.
