Milton Keynes Top Secret Magic Day

Postby nickj » Jun 2nd, '03, 12:36

I was at this yesterday on the Studio9 stall, but did get a chance to wonder around the other dealers and see a couple of lectures, including Andy Nymans, which was brilliant. He taught us three effects which were stunning to be seen, and so easy in their working that anyone could do them (Nyman says that he likes to keep everything as simple as possible, especially with cards!).
I also got to see half of a lecture on balloon magic, not making animals but performing tricks with them, which was quite entertaining, and if I ever do childrens shows I am sure to use the Escapologist Balloon Mouse trick, which again was simple to do but a very good idea. The lecturer, Ali Cadabera, said that someone he had talked to about this, who had seen it at a previous lecture, even manages to get good mileage out of it at comedy clubs rather than childrens parties!

So in all I had a good weekend, as I got in free and curbed my spending to £50 for the Ninja Rings and DVD (my student loan has to pay for beer as well as magic!).

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. - Kristian Wilson, Nintendo, Inc, 1989..

Hey, if it's a secret magic day, what's it going to be called now we all know about it????

(Seige gets buried in a torrent of hate-mail for being a so-called smartarse, but everyone immediately retracts their digital daggers from his back when they realise he was only joking, and was in reality quite interested in the Magic Day - with most of his auto-sarcasm being born from the jealousy ensuing from him missing out on a lecture from Andy (hero) Nyman. Deep sigh...)

(Seige sinks low in his seat after being jibed for missing the Nyman Lecture)

No need to rub it in!!! Anything worth noting on the board about Nyman, or anything else you saw??? I'd love to hear what he was up to...

The three routines that he taught in the lecture were three that he sells, though I can't remember their names right now. He also performed Diceman but didn't give that away!

My current Nyman favourite is the Hidden, which I've reviewed on this board. Funnily enough, I was going to rattle Alakazam's cage and see what was new from Nardi or Nyman... I've got lots of respect for these guys.

There are some great routines by Nyman, and I'm about to order the 'Fight Dirty' lecture notes.

He's such a multitalented guy - but also a little unknown. I advise anyone interested in what we're talking about checks out www.andynyman.com and see what all the fuss is about.

It was the fight dirty lecture that he gave at MK I think, and it does include The Hidden, that was the first of the routines he described, I remember now. Another was called 'Dead Zone'

OK, I know I'm late in spotting this thread but I've been busy! Just wanted to add that Diceman is a hell of a superb routine - I did a review on the Old Forum some time back. It's one of those routines where you can start peforming almost immediately, simple and straighforward with just one small sleight to sort out. 95% of this is presentation so the routine will be as individual as you are. If you like card tricks which aren't card tricks, go get this one!
