Breaking the magicians code

Postby Captain Fantastic » Jun 24th, '03, 09:36

Hello there,

I've just been on Paul Daniel's site...www.the-magic-store, and just noticed a somewhat major breech of the magicians code (you know, the one about the secrecy and all that).

It would appear that they have just started stocking 'The Raven'. OK so most of us here know exactly how the trick works and is (for a lot of people) one of the tricks that most start with.

I looked at the picture and compared it to other magic retailers sites. On the other ones, you get a picture of a raven (as in the bird) which literally gives nothing away.
On the Paul Daniels site, you get a picture of the whole thing, gimmick included. I'll be surprised if they sell any after looking at that picture as it easy to see exactly how the trick is made and more or less, exactly how it's done.

I know this to be a fact as my son never knew how I was doing this trick, then all of a sudden, I hear 'DAD, I've just found out how you do that disappearing coin routine' as he was looking at the picture!!

Come on Paul, You're a Master Magician who we all have great respect for. Please don't allow this to happen!!

Well that's my rant over and done with

Love you all

Marc

I can see your point but, to be fair, unless you already know the 'attraction' of the item, it isn't readily apparent from that picture. The fact that you can see some sort of dingus on the end of a ribbon or elastic with a safety pin is enough to give a lot away though! Pehaps someone would like to have a word with Mr.D and suggest, 'Now that's not magic'!

Hmm...

I think you're over-reacting, just a little.

If someone is desperate enough to find how a trick is done, they'll find out of their own accord - by scanning forums etc.

Also, bear in mind that a complete beginner would have no idea what do do with the device from the photograph on the site. The mechanics of the effect are not discussed at all...

Being honest, I would doubt that Paul Daniels evens sees the website. We're a marketing and design agency, and our 'big' clients just chuck +++£'s at us to do our thing - including websites - and keep them maintained. As long as the bucks are rolling in, they don't really keep an active interest. Which is what I think is happening here...

I know what you're driving at, and I agree - it is a little explicit - but unless you know HOW the effect is done anyway, showing the props like this won't necessarily spawn a clan of DIY coin vanishers.

In context, if you present a layman with a photograph of the entire stack of components needed to create a fully functioning internal combustion engine, they won't necessarily be able to build a car...

I noticed a similar event with the Deep Astonishment trick. I think its just www.deepastonishment.com that explained tips and raelly secrets that should not be openly discussed. I was astonished and feel that becuase i have paid for it and the secret others should do the same.

Anyway, nowadays sites are cropping up with secrets of magic which i suppose is rather like the masked magician, maybe they are trying to promote their site, p**s other magicians off or try and get us lot to think of new amazing illusions.

All in all its a problem we cannot stop. Everyone can buy magic and therefore a select few who are rich and just bought the secret will no doubt tell the world somehow.

Keep magic in the magicians' hands only!

It's a good job I copied (i.e. creatively edited!) all the info a few weeks back!
