Elmsley Count in Tarbell books?

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

if you have twenty quid going spare, the Counthesaurus by Raucenbaumer (spelling) is stupendous...an abecederian of falseities...

you get alot for your money too...plus a maven foreword giving you a concise history of them all and the books they were published in...

Swamy,

In the manuscript for the Four Card Trick the Ghost count is taught by taking the cards into a deep grip - the dealing grip - into your _right_ hand. I'm not sure if changing the hands over constitutes a new handling.

Take care, Ian

Thanks!
I will try and track this tome down, it's not one I've heard of before...

Will browse the books more deeply - I must have missed that one!

Elmsley Count

Postby Allen Tipton » Apr 11th, '07, 21:39

:) After all that information Lord Freddie..I have to say, the Elmsley Count is not in Tarbell. As far as I can remember there is no effect/sleight by Alex Elmsley in Tarbell.
You can always buy the 2 Elmsley books but they do cost.

Thanks Allen, I was thinking it may be in the last two, later volumes (Harry Lorayne) which I don't have. There appear to be no false counts in Tarbell at all.
I'll have to add those Elmsley books to my ever-expanding list of expensive tomes...
I can do the count, but want to improve it.
I think there's a new condition called NEMP.

I would agree with Abraxus on the Gerry Griffin DVD's. there are only a few card effects on the 7 dvd set I use but the 2 dvds with false shuffles, slieghts and flourishes are very well taught...and he has got a soothing voice which lulls the ladies in the dvd's right in to Gerry's busy hands....Gerry Griffins complete card magic is the set I'm thinking of btw

Have a look here:

http://www.world-of-magic.co.uk/magic.asp?id=1350

There is also a list of all the effects etc taught.

Not sure whether you can or it is indeed cheaper to buy singularly but vol. 1-3 or 4 may not be worth it

Edit: I just had a thought....It happens rarely so you're in luck. Gerry griffin has a packet trick called Queens out of Control which is a very nice routine which has a DVD with it that has an explaination of the elmsley. Might be a cheaper option.

Elmsley( Ghost) Count

Postby Allen Tipton » Apr 12th, '07, 14:30

:) An easy description of The Elmsley(Ghost) Count is to be found in Roy Johnson's Second Time Around, page 76. It is also ( according to Geoffrey Scalbert) in Tricks You Can Count On by Chesbro & West, & in Vernon's More Inner Secrets by Ganson, (Twisting The Aces)
The Ghost Count is described also in The Complete Walton, Volume 1 by Roy Walton.
I've never seen The Collected Works of Alex Elmsley Vol 1 & 2 so I don't know whether it is in there.
I first came across it in Joe Ridings, The Only 3 Card Trick With 4 Cards back in the late 70's.
It is of course a 'sleight' that every magician should be familiar with.

I made a video tutorial on a couple of handlings of the count, as well as the Jordan count. It runs to just over thirty minutes in total (!) and was part of the Virtual Sessions. It should be available from Merchants of Magic as a download quite soon.

Take care, Ian

I have to say, those DVD's look splendid. I'll have some magic spending money soon so it's a toss up between this and Banachek's Psi Series.
Do you have these DVD's? Are they as great as they seem?
There's certainly a lot of stuff on them.
