Stupid people + film industry that churns out drivel + guns available to any fool = trouble

Guns are glamourised in the US from the moronic rap music that the young "get down to" through to the spate of mediocre films that feature gun-toting criminals that idiotic people watch in their hordes.

If these people watched Carry On films and listened to Black Lace, this sort of behaviour wouldn't enter their minds.

While this is a tragedy in the U.S., I'd appreciate it if you did not call the laws of my country laughable. No one believes that this should have happened and I would like it if you did not attack my country. The only person who should be blamed for this is Cho Seung-Hui.

I think that it's also funny how the UK thinks that they are the best country in the world. You don't try to conquer half of the globe without confidence.

So it is to you, Mark Lewis, that I say: BACK OFF!

There is no best country in the world. People typically have preferences for where they live, but that doesn't mean that it is the best country.

Different places may have positive points which the other doesn't, but they'll likely have negatives which another lacks.

And the US does tend to be more patriotic than the UK I'd say - it's also worth noting that Mark lives in Canada (I believe?) and I'm sure he's said some pretty bad things about the UK before.

If that be the case, I guess I can't criticize his country for being overly confident. Canada hasn't done anything with confidence.

This really made me chuckle.

The UK doesn't have to prove itself. It just gets dragged into conflict by more stupid warmonger-trigger-happy-'superpowers'.

Ever hear of the British Empire? We used to rule half the bloody planet, let alone conquered it!

and the world was a better place!

The US can say what they like about Britain, at least we make it harder for idiots to get hold of guns. And we have far less idiots here than a nation that buys pet rocks and thinks Jim Carey is funny.

In other States it is just like purchasing a bar of chocolate and I stand by that statement. Virginia where the tragedy occured is one of those States. There are some cursory regulations but they are quite laughable. To even consider selling a gun to a high school student is beyond belief.

Even if a person is of the highest character they shouldn't be allowed to own a gun under any circumstances.

Every other country in the world is aghast at the gun culture in the US. It is madness. Nobody should be allowed to have a gun unless they are police or army. Perhaps security guards and certain occupations. Nobody else should be allowed to.

I am always amused that the USA considers itself the best country in the world. It ISN'T. It really isn't and never has been.......................

Weird..and worrying. I'm finding myself agreeing with Mark 'Ronald' Lewis.

hmmmm..... except refusing to go to war in Iraq for NOTHING

(and of course repeatedly beating the US in every men's and women's international and Olympic hockey game in the past decade - we did THAT with confidence!) (i sincerely hope I'm not setting myself up for a big dissappointment at this year's world championships!)

An Empire we had and we shall have again vote me. Things where better under the empire look at africa if they stayed under us then there would be no Bono. How did the potatoe famine not wipe out his blood stock i will never know.

Land of hope and glory mother to the three...

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

Yes, if we'd have kept the Empire, we wouldn't have been blessed with the following:

baseball caps
the simpsons
jim carey
people saying "it was like...oh my god"
friends and other trite unfunny shows
junk food
idiots in suburban areas thinking that being in a gang and shooting people is 'cool'
rap music
bon jovi
nerdy tv shows like 'Lost' which people spend all their time trying to work out the 'twist' when they should really be trying to work out what's lacking in their lives

Good things America has given us:
Some great magicians
Frank Zappa
Sparks

The record should really state that Jim Carey is Canadian... I have mixed emotions on this... :? however for all who think he can't act, watch "Man on the Moon".

It's America that foists his films upon us, still, every Canadian should feel a bit of shame every time his smug, gurning face dulls up a screen

Out of curiosity - how has this become an America-bashing thread (and, by extension - a UK and Canada bashing one as well)?

I'm sure if we felt like it, we could go round and round about the dark shadows of all our respective homelands. But what's the point? I have no reason to lash out at the Brits - and I happen to enjoy many things about the country and its' population. I don't think I'm wrong when I say that door swings both ways.

However, I do take some offense to the constant use of the word "idiot" to describe Americans. Kindly keep your sweeping generalizations to yourself, Lord Freddie.

No - US gun laws aren't perfect - but we're trying to get there. The problem with situations such as these is that they don't truly present the opportunity for constructive debate. It serves only to polarize both sides. There are merits to each side of the issue, but the inability/refusal to listen to them makes it that much harder. When the dust settles on this shooting, hopefully some level heads can start to get some work done.

Forgive me for not being overly optimistic, though...
