For me Geller feels too derivative of himself and far too quick to simply back whatever crackpot ideas anyone puts in front of him if he thinks there's brass in them. He's a businessman who's stock in trade is belief, however bogus.

A very ugly vibe indeed.

Great suggestions...remember it is someone who steps out of the comfort zone of performing magic and take on a general leader role and begins to stake a claim...

Prof Chris French?

He teaches his students to cold read, which is nice. They wheel him out whenever there's a psychic about.

Is French a magician?

I guess Peter Lamont, but not well known. His books on the Rope Trick and the First Psychic celebrate the ingenuity of the magicians and root for our side, which is very refreshing.

Difficult to be specific and we've had a few discussions on this in the past (all locked eventually for various reasons!) but my gut feeling (and it's a large gut!) is that he's not quite as he seems, a bit too lofty and superior. Dunno why. There are lots of rumours and stories on line which may or may not be true but, in the context of this thread, he doesn't get onto my list of intellectual. To me that's someone who is wonderfully cerebral and capable of great thoughts etc in addition to anything else they may or may not do. DB mucks about with minds but in a cerebral way, all the others mentioned so far are, IMHO, entertainers of varying degrees from OK to utterly superb.

Well lacking anything further I'll carry on in my current perspective, which rates him far higher than anyone else mentioned so far when it comes to being a public intellectual.
