Well, all I will say about S3 is that I was dearly disappointed.
If it hadn't have been for some 'passable' CGI effects, then I would have rated this a total turkey.
Saw it with nephew and wife, and all I can say is the tortillas I had at the start were a lot more interesting.
The story was... well, there wasn't one... it was a bit of a 'tying up loose ends' effort. Far too many plotline holes in existence.
Now... I know it was intended to be a 'comic' book movie which is brought to real life. But some things work in comics much better than they do on the big screen. Forgoing the laws of physics, the realms of rationality and the caverns of charisma, what you're left with here is something which could have been a really great adult/children hybrid adventure—i.e. it appeals to adults and kids, a-la Pirates of the Carribean—but sadly I think that the filmmakers had no idea at any point of who their target audience would be.
Without the fact we'd promised my nephew that we'd take him along, we'd have not bothered—or at the most, we'd have waited till it came to Sky TV.
After watching the first two movies (begrudgingly) I was quite shocked at how well they were done, and I was kind of looking forward to S3.
Was it a kids film then? Well, pre-teens nephew thought the action was great, and he loved Venom. But even he was disappointed at the end.
Mrs Seige was quite taken aback with the whole thing. She thought poor old Toby (Parker) looked about as sexy as a carpet burn when he was 'possessed'.
As I said, the CGI was passable—certainly nothing new or groundbreaking. Some very clever techniques were used, but the whole thing was very superficial and plastic, which also pretty much summed up the acting/character development.
All in all, I would suggest that if you are able to switch off your brain, skimp over plot holes, ignore continuity and vegetate for 2 + hours, then you may enjoy this.
But, if you like a film which is intellectually challenging and engaging, you may find this to be just a little TOO over-hyped, as I did.
If this movie has been hailed as one of this year's major releases, I am dreading what else there is to come.
I think we may just stay at home a bit more this year, with some nice wine and a good book.
(Blimey... I've only been married 6 months and I already sound like an old man)
