I'm not really sure what you're talking about. Is it the Snap Change? Try to provide a video of the effect that you're describing.

Yup sounds like the snap change. I think I brought it from PenguinMagic ages ago. Only 3 quid :D

I had an idea that shapeshifter was an E exclusive, wasn't it?

In which case, then yes, deffo a snap-change :D

Well as I said I started with E stuff and it sounded like that change.

Easy assumption to make, MJ - the Shapeshifter is a nice move, and - more importantly for beginners (arguably E's target market) - is somewhat easier to master than the Snap-change.

That-aside, they're both eye-popping changes, and very visual.

The downside to the Shapeshifter? - The audience can work it out easily, unless you move on quickly.

The downside to the Snap-Change? It's much knackier to get down correctly, is angle-sensitive, and takes extra work to clean-up (the upside, though, is that the SC looks like real magic, and will keep the specs guessing for the rest of their lives!!! )

EDIT: It's nice to see someone, coming from an Ellusionist Intro to the art, and beginning to move out of their comfort-zone, Jim - how does it feel to be stepping into the wider wold of magic? (Time for a name-change - can I suggest, 'Chrysalis-Jim'? :D )

Is the snap change, without trying to give to much away, the change when you holding it closer to their face helps....um...not give it away?

Yup - although you can do at varying distances, with the same effect, so long as you have your angles sorted.

i believe you are talking about Ed Marlo's Snap-colour change...

in various books, but you'll probably prefer the marlo dvds...watch a master at his work...
