Help wanted in creating or finding a trick

Postby Mordred » Jul 3rd, '07, 23:27

Hi!

I am hoping somebody can help me. I've been doing magic for two years, mostly money magic, just for friends and family. I also do some levitation. I am really pleased to find this site with so many magicians and I am looking forward to joining in your discussions.

I need a magic trick or an effect for a particular purpose. If anyone has any ideas please help me.

It is really a promotional item.

It is a trick that can be sent in the post and is quite flat.

A trick that virtually does it itself. The person opening the envelope will either take it out the envelope and something then happens or there is very basic instructions to do one or maybe two things only, like "pull here" or "turn over," etc.

The trick needs to surprise the person receiving it, but not scare them or make them jump out their seat or make a mess all over their desk.

I thought of a spring loaded (elastic band!) cardboard pop-up magic box. But that hasn't got me too excited.

Ideally it would involve magic and have a Wow factor.

Maybe there is a wand trick? A card trick would be too complex. Please put forward anything you can think of.

Thank you for reading my post!

You might want to check out an old piece known as "Mail Mentalism" by Eddie Joseph

There a few possibilities in Karl Fulves SW books - "Hypercard" in Table Magic and the Bob Neale chapter in Paper Magic.

Thank you all above for your suggestions.

I looked at Mail Magic. I think this is too complicated. It needs to be a more instant effect.

Paper magic is a possibility and I am investigating this.

Take a look at this dragon. See the video.

Please put forward any more ideas you can think of.

I need a trick that can be sent in the post that virtually does it itself, or the recipient does just one or two simple things.

I am assuming you have spoken to the person you are going to send this 'trick' to? If so, you could call them and perform one of the many card over the phone tricks that are out there. Once you know the card they are thinking of, ask them to keep the card in their mind and you'll finish the trick at your next meeting. Then post their thought of card to them, along with your business card. That should get their attention!

Whilst we're on the subject of posting cards, you need to hear this (true) story...

Me and a few friends went out for drinks last Thursday. We got progressively drunker as the night went on, naturally. Come 3am and the walk home someone suggested I 'do some card tricks'. So I take my deck out and do some stuff before someone suggests I demonstrate my card throwing skills. I proceed to hit street lights and signs etc. as we walk down the street. Then we pass a postbox and my friend suggested I throw a card in there. So I did, after writing my name, my work address and 'Freepost' on the Ace of Diamonds. (My company is not a freepost company so I never in a million years expected to see it again!)
Anyway, amazingly, it arrived on my desk this morning! I couldn't believe it! That's got to be the best card transposition EVER.
Over the last few months Royal Mail have lost or failed to delivery a passport and numerous booking confirmations to my home yet a playing card with drunken scribbles on it makes it through their sorting office and safely to its destination without anyone paying a penny! I am not going to waste any more money on stamps - that's for sure.

Obviously, DO NOT try this yourself. I do not think hundreds of magicians posting cards with 'freepost' written on them is going to help our postal system, especially with the amount of strikes going on at the moment.

I just had to share that with you all because it's the first time I've been impressed by a card trick in a long time!

That's a cool playing card! I might try that!

Thanks for your reply! No I have not spoken to the person. It is best described as a promotional novelty trick to grab the attention of the people who open it. It is to do with a magic related manuscript. They always say don't send gimmicks, but I feel I need to for a particular reason I can't go into. Sorry to seem secretive about it.

It should cost very little and be almost instant, not complicated and not involving very much reading if at all and have a wow factor!

I know I am asking a lot, but there must be something.

A very basic trick instant trick, mind reading, card, a pop-up effect, coin or optical illusion etc.

I do not know card tricks? Would any work in letter form?

Consider that apart from including objects like cards, I could print anything on the letter.

I have an idea. Basically on the outside of the envelope have directions for them to think of any card. Then have them open the envelope. Inside is their card!

PM me if you're interested.
