How Horrible is this?

I can't believe that something like this can still happen, it's somthing that you'd expect in the Middle Ages not today.

That poor girl must be going through hell as it is, to have that put on her as well is horrible. How can a 'civilised' country allow their judges to just make up whatever sentence they want.

It makes you wonder what kind of, shall we say "pressure" she was put under to make the confession. 500 lashes? A thousand? Beheading? Being gang raped again?

Sickening.

that's exactly what I was thinking. How can that judge honestly believe what he has done is justice.

Unfortunately, us folk in the 'civilised' world are only 'civilised' through conditioning and expectation. Such things are really not that out of the ordinary.

A mate of mine (anyone in Bournemouth, have you seen or heard of Paul Fazakarley?) worked in Saudi for many years. He used to see public beheadings etc. regularly, sometimes even as a 'lesson learned'.

Cultural differences are what set us apart, even if we find them unfair, bizarre or just purely inhuman.

A good friend of ours (free plug: www.limoz.net) runs his own limo company. He's Indian (and yet charvers insist he's a 'Paki'... which severely pi$$es him off), and he tells me tales of particular noteworthyness of what us 'westerners' would see as cruelty and abuse of women.

Although this isn't anywhere near the same as the story Lommie posted, it makes you realise that in the world, not everyone is treated as equals. Makes you good to feel British sometimes, and stop griping and whining about where you live or how cruddy your life is! :O

Here's another piece of idiocy, though not in the same class: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/7112929.stm

A class of 6 and 7 year olds. They get to name a class teddy, so like good Muslims they name him Mohammed. Then all hell breaks loose...

Crackers, some people...

No wonder there are concerns about certain parts of the world and their traditions. The part I liked best was
Twenty out of the 23 children chose Muhammad as their favourite name.
Democracy at work - and then shattered?

In reply to Tomo's Link she was a scouser so she was a bound to end up inside at some point in her life.

Remember People we cant force what we say is right and wrong to people we just become as bad as the people commiting these acts. Thats why the world is such an interesting place diffirent cultures.

See now a Suadi may be over here and see A 19 year old lass with less clothes on then Gandi drinking buckets load of something blue and staggering home throwing up all the way home. He would probably be outraged as us over some being sent to prison for the Mohammed Bear.

Now if this happend over here a teacher calls a bear Mohammed and gets torrent of abuse then we have every right to jump up and down. But considering its in another country where you have to be carefull then you cant really be too upset.

It like this idiots with no street smarts decide to go backpacking around the world. What happens to them mugged , raped and murdred and they wonder why. Because you have no street smarts you lived in some nice part of the uk and dont need smarts. Send a lad from east london backpacking I bet he would fare better.

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

You're right Mark, our culture's far from perfect. But at least here, that 19 year old lass has the freedom to do that without getting beaten to an inch of her life by the authorities.

We should be open and respect other people's cultures but is it right for any culture to impose such strict rules on what people can and can't do and say.

A lot of countries around the world Dont want democracy or Western culture when they get a taste of democracy they go back to wanting a tyrant. Lets take Russia for example that now has one largest drug problems in the world and also the highest rate of AIDS out side of Africa.

And why should the 19 year old girl be allowed to go out and get rat faced any way? On my money. Why my money? well if it wasnt for the tax paying for the NHS she wouldnt be able to have her stomach pumped would she or some one to pay for offspring from her drunken fumble.

Lord Freddie once said "Say what you like about Adolf at least the buses ran on time"

To be moraly outraged seem to be a very british thing to do I say live and let live. We come from two different worlds after all.

Well Lomster...

Our government, bless their hearts, and our own internal 'etiquette' system is based on the rich getting richer, the poor getting poorer.

The crime/justice/punishement system in this country is abysmal. And far too forgiving.

And yes, we ARE restricted in many ways by ridiculous taxations.

We're drifting a little from the original context I know, but in fairness, every country has their own syntaxes, and unfortunately theres' nothing we can do.

It kind of reminds me of the witch hunts.

(Syntaxes? Is that what prostitutes and drug dealers pay to Mr Brown?)

That's exactly what I thought when I read it :? .

I wonder what America's comment would have been, had it been some poorer country with no oil & other commodities, etc  .

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

It's odd that we are consistenly being told to be 'tolerant' of other cultures and you hear of things like this and the gruesome beheadings (Ken Bigley, etc) a few years ago. Respect their cultures and then we are at war with them? I'm confused!!!!!!

I don't think we should respect such barbaric ways at all. These people are no better than the beast in the fields. If the PC brigade had it's way we would be seeing this sort of thing happening here and have to stand by and let it happen as it's "their culture".

There was a horrific story a few years ago about an illegal from Eastern Europe who followed a woman to her house and raped her. The judge at the time said it was a cultural difference as such courtesies as getting to know someone first and actually having their consent were alien to him so they sent him on some stupid course to learn about British customs and manners!!

He should have been hung - or at least deported.
