Sweeney Todd

Postby Farlsborough » Jan 25th, '08, 00:08

Hey folks. Went to see this tonight, it promised well - Depp, Bonham Carter, Tim Burton behind the wheel etc.

I have to say - save your money :(
It was too long (or if it wasn't, it felt like it) and very slow in many parts - every time something vaguely thrilling looked set to happen, it cut back to the boring romantic sub-plot. (1 1/2 hours into the film and we'd seen one brief murder!)
Even though most of it is sung, there are about 4 songs in the whole thing, all pretty dreary and unremarkable, 3 of them are pining love songs and none of them are catchy or emotive. There is no suspense, and what could have been the one saving grace - some really grisly gore - was absent, and in it's place was "stylistic" thin red paint to be all clever and contrast with the almost-black-and-white way it's shot. No jumps, no spine tingling, not even a brooding sense of dread. Worst of all, you come out feeling nothing for the characters.

I haven't seen it but I can say with some certainty you'd be better spending your money going to see "No Country for Old Men."

i didnt mind it - agree with the song thing though - far too repetative..

depp sounded like bowie, and carter sounded like kate nash...

i though sasha baron cohen was the best thing in it...

Is it just me or does Johnny Depp only seem to accept roles that involve him wearing eye liner? Must be in his contract. Or something.

Bucket of water for Lomster please!

Johnny Depp's done some interesting stuff over the years on the quiet. "The Ninth Gate" is a lovely dark film about authenticating a book supposedly written by The Devil. "Secret Window" is another good bit of afternoon viewing, as is "From Hell".

I love all of Tim Burton's work (well, most anyway). Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, the list goes on (and on).

If he was British, he should be knighted. What the hell, let's overthrow the monarchy and knight him anyway.

Yep, all of them are good... which is why I was disappointed  I suppose the creepy, gothic Burton-ness is there, you just can't balance a whole film on it.

Not a fan of Johnny Depp, particularly after the dreadful performances in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and his amateur dramatics society style impersonation of a drunk in Pirates of The Carribean, but being a lover of British mythology and legend, I was tempted to see this film but decided to watch St Trinians instead.
From the sound of it, it appears I did the right thing.
