So... all my Derren fantasies are destined to remain unfulfilled? (Sigh.)

But, leaving personal disappointments out of it, in this day and age who cares? Especially when a person keeps his private life private -- in which case it's definitely nobody else's business.

As far as the quote about not appreciating magicians, I think there's a certain amount of tongue-in-cheek-ness there. His book "Pure Effect" is permeated with a lot of the same magical ennui. The description of his own evolution from brash annoying table-hopper to the more confident and suave individual we know today is quite telling. He also throws in a semi-serious comment about the way magicians, even well past adolescence, tend to spend so much time alone in a bedroom making repetitive motions in front of a mirror...

What I love more than the Sun's headline is the first line of its report:

TELLY trickster Derren Brown today shatters the illusion he created for millions of viewers – with the admission he is gay.

What illusion??

Since when has Derren Brown's personal life or relationships played any role in his work or public image?

In many ways it reminds me of the time when Bob Mould very casually strolled out of the closet and made no big deal about it, leaving the music press wondering how they were going to get any mileage at all out of the news. But now I'm going off on a very big tangent...

homophobia

It's sad really that a thread like this has to exist. Why should someone be "congratulated" for being gay? It only serves to suggest there is still, even in this day and age a stigma associated with homosexuality.

You wouldn't congratulate someone for saying they liked Salt'n'Vinegar crisps as opposed to Cheese and Onion or anything else so trivial.

All the discussion surrounding Derren's sexuality (whether positive or negative) only serves to suggest and indoctrinate the younger generation into the idea that there is some big deal associated with being gay.

In a world where there was truly no prejudice, it simply wouldn't be an issue.
