Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

Staples Stores and other large stationers probably still sell carbon paper - WH Smith might do it - but it's not so common as it used to be. Duplicate and triplicate receipt books will have a couple of sheets enclosed with them.

Rymans also sell it.

There are two sorts of carbon - 'typewriter' and 'pencil'. I'm sure you can work out why they are called that! Basically, pencil carbon requires less pressure to leave a mark, so you should get that sort if you can. Pencil carbon seems to be available only in blue these days, rendering it all but useless for some magical purposes (but it should be fine for what you want).

Seriously, don't discount a billet switch.

if you buy yourself some pretty blue eggshell coloured paper, using some of the things discussed here becomes less problematic if you worry about such things...

rymans have an online store, they may well sell what you want...

That reminded me, an old routine where the spec writes something on a piece of paper using an 'ordinary' envelope as a backing sheet insisted on the pen being a red one and the carbon paper also being red. Apparently the copy looks as good as the original in red. Can't for the life of me remember what the routine was but it set me wondering if red carbon paper is still made?

Only at one place I could find: http://www.imcclains.com/catalog/blocks ... paper.html

It's in the US, but does have a bulk rate if you ever track down the effect and REALLY like it.

I get my carbon paper from a little art shop (very useful for transfering sketches onto a canvas), they do it in blue and black. Might be worth seeing if you've got a decent art shop near you.

you could also try looking for graphite transfer paper, I find it doesn't work quite as well as carbon paper but will still do the job.

I got mine from one of those discount stationary shops... Stationary Box, Stationary World, something like that. It's readily available.

You can also get dressmakers' carbon paper in red, but I've no idea if it's suitable for the effect Mandrake mentioned!

Literally anything that will make an impression pad, so I'll have a look! Went to Partners and they had nothing, and then to my local art shop, but it was closed!

Wildcard

Go to a local printer and ask for carbonless transfer paper, brand name NCR. It is a treated paper that trnasfers the image whether it is typed or written. Its almost like the R and S principle. The top sheet is treated on its underside and the second sheet is treated on its topside. You really don"t need those two sheets on top of the pad. If they were under a regular sheet and they wrote on that sheet it would not leave a mark onthe sheet directly under it but the image would transfer to the third sheet down. Have the printer explain how it works then use your imagination.

Cheers Al Doty, I've now performed it once with carbon paper and a clipboard, but I will take your suggestion whenever I get a bit of free time.
