Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

I wonder how many magicians Andy has converted to Judaism through his performances.

I don't mean literally, of course. Just the guys who talk about wedding canopies, presumably right before they do a rope routine with a French accent, then a very camp egg bag sequence.

I think that the presentation is powerful because it is what Andy feels. I am not sure that anyone aping Andy's performance will carry it off quite as well, unless they feel the same way about things, even if they change the words.

Or, to put it another way, do things that fit you, rather than things that look great largely because another performer has invested time, imagination and part of himself in coming up with a presentation that suits him.

Sorry, I shall go and take my pills now.

It's basically a reverse find the lady trick. The spectator mixes the cards, and the performer can always find the lady.

Andy's version is very personal to him, being about his wife and his faith (well, it wasn't exactly his faith, but along those lines). The point is that of the three things in the trick (Andy doesn't use playing cards), although they all mean something to him, his wife is the most important of all, so he can always find her picture.

It's been about six years since I watched this bit of the DVD, so I hope I've remembered it right.

With the added element of facing away from the cards and the audience

I appreciate that this post is a year and a half old but I had exactly the same question as it's author. However, being slightly arrogant, I resolved myself to solving the method by repeatedly watching the peformance. I am satisfied that I could now perform it exactly as Nyman does. Nyman does three reveals. First the cards are open ( I know this method ) then the cards have their backs to the audience ( I've worked out this method ) then the cards are placed in envelopes ( I have a workable method for this exactly as Nyman does it ) I'm pretty sure I have the same method that Nyman is using as anything else would be too complicated.

I'm not sure how this forum works as I've only just joined. I don't want to get booted off on day one for publicly tipping a method so please PM me if you'd like my explanation.

Hi and welcome! We don't go in for exposure or trying to publicly reverse engineer commercial effects or those in professional magicians' repertoires but many magi will be able to create a similar result by what may very well be different methods. No harm in discussing those but if matters seem to be tipping the commercial workings then we'd have to edit or delete stuff for obvious reasons.

Understood with apologies!! Although I would say I have no idea what Nymans' commercial methods are since he's never revealed them and I wouldn't say I'm 100% correct in any event - I'm just guessing as usual. I've had a look through your FAQ's. Can I discuss my thoughts in a PM with someone? I'd never tip a method publicly, particularly a commercial effect. But with respect to Nymans sophie trick, it would be really useful to hear someone elses ideas as to how it's achieved - albeit private of course. Is this ok? I lve in a fairly isolated area so I'd like to make the most of forums such as these - without breaking any rules!!

If anyone wants to communicate by PM then that's fine but the PM facility won't kick in until you've made 5 posts. In the meantime, how about nipping over to Introductions and telling us a bit more about you - that'll add another post to your total!

Does anybody have a link to a performance of this trick? The description reminds me of something I read in some material published by mister Nyman...

I asked Andy in person and he ain't tellin'! He said it's not marketed.

Kevmundo, just PM'd you the method I used on stage. No stooges, no pre-show work, etc.

YUM!

I had a photo of Britney and claimed that it was a photo of my wife. "Yes, she does look a bit like Britney, doesn't she." I can't say it came across as powerfully as Andy's version, but it got a few giggles. (Well, one or two.)
