COMPETITION - Answers On A Postcard...

Postby Rufio » Oct 13th, '08, 11:14

DISCLAIMER - Just For Fun:

Ah ha! That topic title caught the attention of your left mouse button, didn't it? But please don't turn away in disinterest due to the banality of this thread...

Inspired by the Queen of Club's thread on the Derren Brown competition, has anyone ever won anything in a competition? Being the Dove's Head, this could be non-magical or magical in nature.

To get the ball rolling, I once won a mountain bike at Asda for correctly guessing how many Petit Filous yoghurt pots would fit in an Asda trolley. I also won a massive Tonka truck shaped toy box for drawing a kick ass cowboys and Indians picture, which I copied from a Wagon Wheels wrapper.

Suffice it to say, no prizes are awarded for the most flamboyant or extravagant prize, but it could be fun to see the entries rolling in...

£10 for 3 numbers a couple of times.
£70-ish for 4 numbers once.

Being psychic, you'd think I'd be better at this kind of thing. But no. I never win nuffin guv.

Actually themagicwand, that's just reminded me: my mum and dad won 5 balls and the bonus ball on the lottery several years ago (missed out on number 13 as the other ball to make us millionaires.) I picked the numbers myself from pages numbers of a Led Zeppelin guitar tab song book. Page number 13 was the song "Your Time Is Gonna Come", which, in retrospect, would have been befitting. Of course, we were ecstatic at the time, BUT on that particular draw something like an unprecedented 15 people shared the jackpot and about 30 or summat shared the 5 balls and bonus. So we only got about £600!

We remember it well as a local vicar pressed the lottery machine starter button. We have always been atheiests and Buddhists in equal measure, with agnostic tendencies in times of need.

Mystic Meg would make a great mentalist. I'm sure as a psychic there must be some kind of unwritten professional code not to use one's powers for self gain.

Magic Mark: I've perused your website in the past. Very impressive wins. All that power would go to my head and i'd be absolutely corrupt!

Just about the only proactive thing you can do in terms of picking lottery numbers is to avoid the numbers lots of people pick. For instance, people tend to go for birthdays, so numbers 1-31 tend to get chosen more often than 32-49. I'm not sure if this is true any more, but when the lottery started, something like 100,000 people would choose 1,2,3,4,5 and 6, meaning if those numbers ever turned up (and they've as much chance as any other) each person would win less than a tenner.

Wheels are quite interesting, where you pick nine numbers or so, and then put on a number of lines of different selections from those nine. Again, not doing much to improve your chances of winning, but upping your returns if you do.

I won the Empire movie magazine quiz 4 months in a row, back in the days where it was 20 or 30 really obscure film questions. I used to send in loads of entries under assumed names... Got caught out in month 5 though when I mixed up the same 2 questions on every entry and got barred!! Boo!!

I won a suitcase for buying a Corsa Premier back in 1996. A tune I wrote, called "Big Clumsy Children" won me a Roland MC-505 synthesizer in 2000. I win £50 most months on the Premium Bonds (I have got a lot of them, though). And I won Best Privacy Feature and Best Overall Security Feature at the 2008 BT IT Security Journalism Awards.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

I've won a digital camera and printer a few years ago, which I promptly flogged on eBay. I think that's about it. I'm not particularly lucky. :(

I once won a VHS detailing how to win at pokemon cards.

From a magazine called FBX (For Boys Xclusively).

Spelling wasn't a concern of mine in those days...

Bet you're all jealous now!

I didn't win anything except the admiration of my fellow geeks at school when i had a cheat for the Spectrum game "Kung Fu" published in a copy of CRASH magazine.

Apart from that, i once won the heart of a girl; but it was during her open-heart surgery. I bet the surgeon i could get a hula-hoop to fit up her nostril. I won.

Here's to you Sarah - rest in peace.
