Hi, I'm new to this forum :D! and I've been interested in magic since a friend of mine did a trick, I was like :O! BS!!!!! lol... anyways simple as some tricks are they can be effective... :D I know I'm new but I've been looking on how to the "The Pass" and I just need to know is YouTube lying to me on how to do so? I've watch like 30 videos on how to and people performing it and i dunno... I just think people wont buy it on real life...I'm not asking how to do so but is YouTube cheating on me?

First of all, welcome to Talk Magic, I hope you find it to be a helpful place to help you grow into magic.

No, you're cheating yourself by using Youtube. The videos you'll find there are usually wrong, unhelpful, and pretty poor examples of what magic should be.

Do yourself the favor of doing things right. Start with the Royal Road to Card Magic, Bobo's Modern Coin Magic, and Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. These can be found in nearly any bookstore or online. These will help you not only understand the methods behind magic, but what it can and should be as an art. These books are the best building blocks available and will help you find your strengths, your weaknesses, and your interests.

Good luck

Hiya and welcome to TM,

That's good advice from Mage Tyler, you're so much better getting yourself a decent book to learn from. Those youtube tutorials are horrible at best and most of the time teach really bad methods.

'iya and welcome - just wanted to second the above helpful comments. Royal Road to Card Magic is available from www.whsmith.co.uk for £6.59 including delivery and the Mark Wilson periodically pops up on Ebay for £6/7 on Ebay.

The Pass is a great move and with enough practice you will get it smooth, but look into the Riffle Pass - it's very hard for the spectator to pick up on. In any case, as a newbie, the Pass is actually considered an advanced move, and is not as essential as you might believe, as there are methods that even professionals will always use. The book(s) will teach you this.

Youtube is sometimes OK for videos (e.g. performances), but does have a lot of trash. Honestly, for less than £7 with a book you can't go wrong.

All the above messages are spot on, take there advice,

Just make sure when it comes to magic you stay away from you tube full stop,

It will only teach you how not to do magic and you can fall into the amateur magicians youtube trap.

Bicycle cards are Poker size but any other brand can be used. Bridge sized cards are slightly narrower but equally useful. The main reason Bicycle cards are used a lot is because there's a big range of special and gaffed cards in that style.

You can buy plastic bicycle cards, but I would try to get the paper ones, the standard size is poker 808, they are really durable. Plastic ones can be a bit hard to manipulate, and if they are clear then your spectators will be able to see right through your trick!

Faqzor,

I think you are confusing plastic coated cards with plastic cards. Nearly all the playing cards we use are made from card and are plastic coated to give them a durable finish. You can use any make of playing card as long as its a decent quality. To get you started, the cards should all be cut the same size, when you take them out of the box the edges of the pack should be smooth and remain so if you turn some of the cards 180 degrees. They should have some sort of shiny or linen finish which makes them smooth and slide over one another.

All playing cards bend and riffle shuffles are just practice and explained in the books you've been advised on.

Also, we prefer not to use abreviated text speak here.

Enjoy your time here. Sadly, there are no magic shortcuts, you will have to do what everyone else here has done, practice.
