Well everyone, last night went better than my best dreams for it. On the back of last night I now have a regular Sunday Lunchtime booking and two Christmas party nights booked.

I had a three routine programme worked out and only used one and a half of them. I stuck to stuff I really know and it went smoothly because of that. And I kept it simple.

What did I learn?

Well, I learned that tables full of 18 to 30 year old men need to be avoided. All they want to do is deconstruct the trick and show you one "their mate taught them". If you add attractive young ladies to those tables then the mixture becomes lethal because the young men need to prove to the ladies that they can outdo the magician. Absolutely amazing behaviour patterns!

I also learned that when you try to perform "You do as I do" you MUST watch every move the spectator is making because somebody will always get it wrong! Twice last night I failed with this trick because the spectator dropped a card or cut wrong and I wasn't quick enough to catch them.

The other thing I have to get a grip of is making sure before I hand a deck to a spectator to shuffle that the spectator knows how to shuffle. Having a nice new deck of bikes spilled over a beery table and on to the floor and having a flustered magician on his hands an knees trying to gather up strays is not the most professional of impressions to give!

All these things however are an education, I am sure I will soon enough find that there is plenty more for me to learn!

Congratulations! You will see everything will become easier in time ;)

and btw. as soon as some spectators become obnoxious as a group and the ones thats left dont put them back at their place finish the one thing you are doing, apologize to the nice spectators and tell everyone that you dont want to perform under such conditions. then move to another table.

greets

I don't know if I'd want to make that serious an ordeal about it.
I think I'd just have a little laugh about it, and move on to the next group.

well its really not funny often. and among a group of hecklers there are always someone who really wants to see the magic the way its intended to be. and its to them i apologized ;)

but what i noticed (i perform myself at a restaurant) is that the better you present your tricks, the better you plan your routine the less ppl want to disturb you. they becme captivated by what you are about to show them or are showing them!

so think of your presentation too!

Thanks for the kind words everyone, now I have my work cut out.

If I am to be doing a regular spot in this pub I need to vary my act regularly. I am mainly a card man. I don't think I will ever be a coin man so I am looking for some ideas for walk around which I can intersperse my card work with.

Holy Moly and spongeballs served me well for one night, I have a P*** W****t routine I took but didn't use but there I start to dry up with portable stuff. Any ideas would be appreciated. Ninja Rings is something I have decided to get and learn.

Also, any suggestions for childrens walk around will be appreciated.

Thanks all.

John

Rope work always goes down well! I'd recommend Fibre Optics by Richard Sanders! Although you'll probably get away with your usual routines as the majority of your spectators will vary from week to week!
