But surely if you know in yourself you need to be able to break away from it then its so much easier to leave them at home??? If I dont want to perform I just dont take anything at all... its the easiest solution

To not bring anything magic-related anywhere with me is pure lunacy. I can bring it, just got to work on not using it. I have found myself frequently denying performances lately because I know I need to cut down. Usually on friday I go public in the halls but most of the time I stay with my friends.

And I do have a few other hobbies :). Golf, filmmaking, movies, acting, comedy, music, and writing are just a few.

Well, I literally just went to get my cat of 12 years euthanized. How am I coping? With cards. I've been doing Faros since I got home. Case closed.

As much as you have my sympathy at the loss of a pet, you are missing our point. The discussion is in regards to when in the company of the lay public and what to do/say in order to avoid performing in a situation where maybe you wouldnt want to. Im the same as you - I find practicing rather theraputic, but thats really not the point we are aiming at.

You do have my sympathy though.

Well thank you very much. He meant a lot to my family and it has been a sad morning.

Anyways, back on topic. To not carry cards is out of character. They are like cigarettes for me, I'm rather addicted to them. I always bring them where ever I go, if only to play with them. Do laypeople I see regularly know this? No, and I prefer to keep it that way seeing as I'm trying to tone down the magic. I shudder at the thought of becoming "out of practice".

Without wishing to offend anybody, perhaps the cards or coins or whatever you carry are merely a comfort thing?

Like going out without your mobile, you probably feel naked without it, but chances are if you do get a call or text it wont be life changing anyway. Plus, they invented voice mail for a reason.

I digress. I too carry cards everywhere, usually one normal deck but occasionally a normal and a trick deck such as Perfection or The ID.

I dont like lying to people about carrying cards, there's no good ever comes from lying and every now and then you'll get found out anyway. When i started the thread i just wondered how people got on with turning people down when they ask to see something. Disappointing people isnt nice, but neither is being bugged when you just want some down time. I agree with daleshrimpton, you have to have down time or you get magicked out, and while i do get jaded every now and then, when i see a new effect or learn something new i get so excited i feel like a kid, and i dont want to lose that.

And im sorry about your cat too.

I still get that feeling every day! EVERYTHING magic excites me. Are te cards a comfort thing? Yes. Are they MERELY a comfort thing? No. As corny as it may sound, they are a huge part of my life. I DO feel naked without them.

That's fair enough, it's just that some people are embarrassed to admit they carry round the equivalent of a comfort blanket or teddy bear.

I'm one, but i have loads of comforters i can't leave the home without.
Blame the OCD.

Its a recognised fact that you can practice too much.

Depends how hungover I am as to wether I carry ANYTHING that requires effort with me (cards, phone, ipod or missus{hope she doesnt read that!}.

That said, depending where you socialise, could be the difference between getting a gig soemwhere and not.

Theres quite a lot of documents relating to that...It even happened to me (once! )
