One Deck Wonders

Postby Farlsborough » Jan 2nd, '09, 01:29

I'm sorry if I've posted this before guys... it feels vaguely familiar but I think that's only because I think about it a lot. :?

Anyhoo, following on from my new year's resolution, I'd like to keep improving my repertoire with regard to single deck, non-gaffed tricks. They don't have to have a sub-plot, an optional phase etc, they just have to be powerful and require pretty much just one deck of cards* - you can destroy as many cards as you want. Doesn't even have to be wildly original - maybe it's a handling of card under glass that is just a real winner in your eyes.

Currently, my three favourite in no particular order are:

1) Card thru hand (a sort of "card across", from the recent Harry Robson DVD)
2) Acrobatic cards (a Greg Wilson trick where a card is flicked through the deck and knocks out the selection... sorry for the poor reference)

3) Torn and Restored card (from Harry Robson's "Magic Under Fire")

Does anyone else have any favourites or suggestions - the sort of thing where someone can throw you a deck, ask for some magic and you can knock them flat?

*I will open this up (just so I don't miss any real scorchers) to tricks that require minute amounts of prep (like having a dupe or double in the pack) or tiny "extra bits", like an elastic band and blob of wax for card on ceiling. I'm after stuff that won't take up extra pocket space, and - important - won't stop me from doing other tricks that require a regular, shuffled deck.

Farlsborough,

I've PMed you with a routine that I used in my Showtime column in the Linking Ring magazine, the official publication of the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

I took that liberty rather than expose anything on the open forum.

For others who may be interested and have access to the magazine, it's titled Truth and Lies.

cheers,

I've just PM'd you a routine as well.

Not sure how it will match up alongside Peter's though

Can't hurt I suppose.

Your reality, sir, is lies and balderdash, and I'm delighted to say that I have no grasp of it whatsoever.

Red Hot Mama obviously, just need a red card for that. Also there's a really nice sandwich effect with the Bizarre Vanish for the second phase that I do a fair bit, pm if you're interested. Don't forget your ACR either. How about Triumph? Ever heard of a self worker called Untouched? If not pm me again cos it's gold dust.

Paul Cummins has a set of eBooks called FASDIU (from a shuffled deck in use) and I have heard nothing but good about them. As you have probably guessed from the name, its a load of tricks that can be done from a shuffled deck in use ( 8) ) 32 tricks in fact.

Which issue was that in please? It would save me a whole lot of time going through the saved copies I have.

Cheers.

The Invisible Palm

One of the first tricks that I learnt and still one that I perform all the time.

Thanks for all your help so far guys and girls, please keep them coming. I would like to do an invisible palm routine, any recommendations?

And Bronz - already with you on Chicago Opener. I still think this is one of the strongest card effects out there.

I'll look into the Cummins material too, sounds excellent.

The invisible palm routine which I prefer (although I've never used it in anger) is the "Mondo Nifty Invisible Palm", which is credited to "Everybody", apparently (nice to know you're appreciated!) in the Art of Astonishment
