A big move is always hard, go with what your heart says. My parents live in Folkestone and it can be really nice in the summer.

Even nicer on the pier. Where all the mackerel are just waiting to be caught.

My brothers used to do a lot of fishing off Folkestone, we'd quite often have an evening BBQ on the Warren and cook up what they'd caught.

I was in much the same position in 1992. Working for the British Council in a building whose lease came up for renewal and was deemed not worth the new price demanded. Half the headquarters moved from central London to Manchester, and an incentive package was promised to anyone willing to move with it.

Like any move, it was a life-changing decision with lots of complications both major and minor. But "life-changing" can be a good thing. We still greatly dislike living in the north, and would move back south like a shot, but other than that it was a good decision on the whole.

Do your research. Where would you be living? What's it like? What can you afford? If it will take you a while to find a place or complete the move, where will you stay temporarily, and where can you store your belongings if necessary?

Also, what sort of incentives is your employer offering? Make sure you claim everything you're entitled to. (We got lucky here because the British Council is a quango and linked to all the civil service bonuses.)

Finally, if you make the move and then lose or quit your job a few years later (as happened to me), would you still be content to live there? What other prospects are available in the area?

Be perfectly frank and open about all the good and bad points you can find. Discuss it with everybody who will be affected. But I must say, Folkestone sounds a much better place to relocate to than Bolton.

Did I mention the quality of the fish off Folkestone pier, specifically the mackerel? Delicious.

(Sorry, EZ. I'll stop now).

The schools here in Kent have the Kent test, aka the 11 plus.

If your children fail it their educational choices are limited. (which, to be fair, might well suit: it isn't axiomatic that high-achievement schools are necessarily better for any given individual, but don't get me started on pedagogy.

If you don't have children, it's still worth thinking about as you might find you want to move on when they get to 11.

Blimey - 2 pages of replies! I wasn't expecting all this :D

Replicant, I am a huge fishing and mackerel fan so if I can go fishing and catch some decent mackerel then that would be super too.

The best thing is, my girlfriend also applied for a job at my company - and rather than being told that there was no work there anymore she was told that she was welcome to move too!
Coupled with the relocation package, redundancy pay for staying with the company (that's weird...) and the possibility of career prospects (and the fact that I'll be one of the only Claims Advisers moving - Claims Manager here we come 8) ) and I'm basically sold.

Me and the missus will both have a job there, renting wise we'll be in a much better position and I understand the fishing can be rather fabulous too.

I'm sold 100% and the missus is 99%

Save me a spot at the Magic Club too! :D :D :D

So, how much of this "relocation package" is going to be spent on the move, and how much is going to be at the mercy of CUPS...?!
