The challenge is to define "magic" in 120 characters or less (including spaces)

One question: Are you sure the challenge will allow you to define "magic" in the sense of magicians' tricks?

There's magic in the occult sense, defined succinctly by Aleister Crowley as "the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will". (Probably the most lucid thing he ever said.)

Then there's magic in the sense of wonder you feel when seeing a rainbow or hearing great music.

And, getting back to magicians' tricks, both of these feed into them. A magician aims to inspire the audience with either the thrill and awe of something supernatural, or the childlike wonder of something beautiful. Or both at the same time.

"Magic teaches us how to lie without guilt." --Eugene Burger
"Hi, Robbie!" "May your mischief be spread." --Derren Brown

Contradictory. Pick one or the other.
Being able to do the unimaginable, perhaps.

Well if your gong to argue semantics of language, (and if so, you should note it would be 'to appear to do the impossible') I would then have to point out to you Jake, that 'being able to do the unimaginable' is contradictory, because obviously it would have to be imagined to even appear to be done.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

How do you define the undefinable? I don't leave it for what it is, and then does it become an illusion and mystery, inconceivable.
