The magician asks a spectator to think of an object from a printed list. The selection process is extremely fair. Yet, even before the spectator makes her selection, the magician knows what object she is destined to pick! This is thought reading the way it was meant to be.

The above is the basic effect of Mental Yarn. Direct, stunning mind reading. However, there are many different ways to present the effect. For example, two spectators can assist the magician, each one selecting a different object. Of course, the magician reads both of their thoughts.

It's pretty versatile. You can use props if you want or you can simply use what is given. A full routine is given in the instructions aswell as several routine "ideas"!

The concept is nothing new (synonyms) and some of the items on the list wont work with a UK audience (who over this side of the pond buys a "popsicle"?) but if you throw away the effect and the cards and thoink about the principle you could have a decent mental miracle.

I was actually rather unimpressed with Mental Yarn, since i primarily purchased it to use as an "over the phone effect", which is what the official promo blurb claims that it can be effectively used for. (as well as over the internet). I'm afraid that this is just not true for the simple reason that unlike the situation where an audience member merely has the chance to have a quick glance at the list of selection options, someone on the end of a phone (or keyboard) will have the complete list in front of them during and after completion of the effect. Now it would seem to me that anyone of average intelligence will likely then suss the method with little thought, irrespective of how convincing an effort was made the presentation.

I think that the official description of what this "packet mentalism" effect is capable of is therefore misleading and i hope that this additional review might save someone a few quid had they been primarily looking for an "over the phone mentalism effect", which incidentally seem to be few an far between.

As Banachek is mentioned, then the first phase of "Lorrayne's buck" (as seen on the PSI DVD's) would work very nicely over the phone. I seem to think it may actually be called "Lorrayne's Switch", but I can't remember from where.

Thanks for the response Re: phone effects. Must say however, that i always found Marc Paul's zodiac sign divination rather contrived. I mean if we are meant to be reading minds, should it really need that many questions to figure it out? Comes across as a bit of a fishing trip to me. But then i always was a bit on the picky side.

Now where did i leave my copy of MENTAL YAWN :-) ???
