Just seen this post in another thread...

I don't blame Shawn for being touchy about it. It's not difficult to check the correct spelling of someone's name; many names have more than one possible spelling. I hate it when people just guess how to spell my name and get it wrong. It's rude. If you're not sure, then ask and I will tell you. Don't just guess!

My name is pronounced Rory and spelt significantly differently, no problem with it though.

That's different. If your name is pronounced "Rory" then to spell it R-O-R-Y is a reasonable assumption to make. Apart from your name, I don't know of another way of spelling Rory.

However, my name is Sunny, and it is not obvious how it is spelt. I've had SONNY, SONI, SUNNI and even SONY! Don't get me wrong; I ain't losing any sleep over it. It's just a pet hate of mine.

P.S. I've never been quoted in someone's sig before. I feel very privileged. :D

My name is not spelt the conventional way, and I dislike having it spelt incorrectly - I can understand it if the person corresponding with me has only heard my name and not seen it written down - however if someone is replying to a letter or an email, my name will be written for all to see - if they cannot get it right then I consider it plain rude, irresponsible and careless.

I don't mind it when people know it's RUAIRIDH but can't remember it UNDER PRESSURE, but slowly it starts to annoy me.

By the way, Lenoir, you were right the first time. It's Shawn. Not Shaun. ;)

Especially when they start shagging my leg and I can actually feel their little willy through my jeans.

That, my friend, is a whole new thread. And seeing as I have no intention of getting myself banned, I will not be starting it.

I agree with the idea that we should make the effort to get names right, it's only common courtesy. Many moons ago in the first job where I had to answer the phone, a guy called and left a question which needed a call back. I asked for his name and he mumbled it so I asked again and a second time he mumbled. I thought it would be a bit embarrassing if I asked again so, thinking quickly, I asked how he spelled it. There was a pause, an exaggerated sigh and he said, very slowly, at least 5 seconds between each letter, 'S....M....I....T....H'

Indeed. How difficult can it be to spell Tomo or Jon when it's actually sat there in front of them? Apparently, it's the hardest thing in the blummin' world for some people. Either that or they genuinely believe they know better than me.

yup - it's Iain, like it or lump it i have that extra I in there...3 vowels, one after the after...

its not:

ian
iian
eoian (which is welsh isnt it?)
iaiin
iani

i've had my name constantly incorrectly spelt for decades - both first and last name in fact, and often by people with far more complex names than mine...yet i can spell theirs easily...

IAIN
