Leaving the community

Postby Mark Waddington » Aug 19th, '09, 20:11

Hi,

Ive decided its time to leave this community. There is a certain member of the community who is trying to make life a living hell for me. They are stealing my routines, stealing my lines, and stealing my tagline. This individual obviously thinks hes better than the rest of us, and I dont like it. In an industry like magic, there is very little room for a thief.

Im not leaving magic, just Talk Magic - I may lurk, but I wont be making any more posts or offering any more advice.

I wish (most of) you all the best in your journey

Mark

Gosh. Care to elaborate? All sounds very mysterious (although not in a good way!).

Best of luck to you Mark.

That's a pretty drastic course of action. Is it necessary for you to leave TM? Who is this individual? If they are doing what you claim, then I think they should be named and given the opportunity to explain themselves. After all, those are some pretty serious allegations you're making.

This person has been stealing my material for quite a while now. Hes been stealing the lines that I use, and entering competitions with my routine. This person has now decided that he wants to use my old tagline. I have tried reasoning, and told him that he will have a lot more respect in the community if he uses his own originality. He then got down to petty "well, im better, more successful than you" etc etc. This person has also claimed on video that he is a member of The Magic Circle... despite not being a member.

Me!

I can do it. There was some dispute over marks OLD name - the teenage trickster. Since it wasnt in use, I wondered if I could use it.

He accused me of piggybacking his success. I then tried to point out that I didnt need to piggyback his success. I've got my own.

Routine - Hardly marks own routine - its an ace sandwich. Erdnase and a cut/pass (spectator's choice - which i dont believe is marks) with a few jokes before hand.

Lines - The disputed line is the Gordon Brown shuffle - the one that doesnt do anything. Mark claims to have been doing it for years! Even though there's a video of him doing the routine and not the joke, and me talking to someone in the background about that joke which I then mentioned to mark later that day.

My explanation. Mark got on my tits. I dont think I've done anything wrong.

EDIT: "better, more successful" was never used. I said that I'm more successful than Mark was at my age.

And when it comes to the magic circle argument - I was mid-routine, and someone said are you in the magic circle - I said yes - to save explaining (mid-routine!) about how I am not yet in the magic circle, as you need to be 18, but I intend to apply as soon as I am old enough, but for now I'm in the junior magic circle.

All the best,
Croz

Is this just a case of professional jealousy? I see you're both working pros, so why can't you sit down, like the couple of professionals that you are, and resolve your differences? Running away from your problems is not the answer and helps no one. It's what children do. Working professionals need to be professional about this and talk it over. Come on, guys.

Well said.

And when it comes down to it - yes, I used the routine I saw Mark do in a competition, and even asked his permission to use the few jokes of your that I use!

The disputed lines is the full scripting, which there is video evidence of you using.

One month after seeing me perform the routine, you do a video of yourself doing the same routine, and in the description, you put "sorry Mark"

The Gordon Brown line is being used by me in the video you mention, and you are then seen to be laughing uncontrolably at the line.

The Teenage Trickster tag is something ive been using for years. All Im saying is instead of using something that somebody else has been using, be creative and think of your own stuff.

You never came to me and asked for any permission, you only made any mention about them coming from me after I challenged you about it.

Oh for heaven's sakes boys, stop being so silly. Wait til you've got a wife, two kids and a mortgage. Then you'll have something to moan about.

Don't make me tell your parents when I see them!

the user name....
Its a daft user name, which is probably why he changed it.

the gags.. I can absolutely assure BOTH of you that that line goes way, way back. just with a different name.

now, "i can do it"... inst the same as"" i should do it. there is such a thing as ethical behaviour, and regardless of where you are in magic, you should try and follow those unwritten rules to the letter where ever possible. If you dont, you will only harm yourself.

and, i could write a long list of names of people, not just magicians, who get on my tits. what i dont do is pester them.they get on my tits..so i avoid them.

you should go away and find yourself. By that i mean find an act that is yours, not marks, mine, or anybody else's..yours.

by doing this, you become a one off, and as a result wont ever be compared with someone else. you wont ever hear the words.. hes better than you... ever again!

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

True - I didnt want to make big deal about it. Mark did. I thought I'd do the right thing of identifying myself, and giving my side of the story before the finger was pointed.

(and the only reason he got rid of the name was because he turned 20. He used it right up to the day before his 20th birthday - you might want to apologise for calling it daft)

All the best,
