I'd quite like to give U2 a good kicking if anyone is up for it.

Punk was very "mod" when it began. By the time Crass, The Exploited etc arrived on the scene, the original punks from Olde London Town had already moved on to create the "Peacock Punk" scene, later rebranded New Romantics. The core of the original punk and later the new romantic scene was Siouxsie Sioux whose band managed to stride through both movements and officially created the Goth scene shortly after New Romanticism had decamped to Sheffield (Human League, Heaven 17, ABC et al).

As far as the London scene goes, there was a direct link from punk through to new romantics to goth. All three scenes featured the same players.

There. That passed a few minutes didn't it.

Yes. I hate Bono. If he cares so much, why doesn't he surrender all his royalties from now on to charity? Surely he has enough money by now?

Personally, I couldn't stand The Stranglers. A bunch of posh boy pub rock bandwagon jumpers in it for the cash as far as I could see. And they could play properly. I mean, you listen to that keyboard glissando on No More Heros. That's the sound of a trained pianist. It's got nothing to do with the Sniffin' Glue "This is a chord, this is another chord, this is a third one. Now, form a band and say something you mean!" ethic. Grrr... I didn't like The Clash until well into the early 1980s because they looked too 'styled' and formulaic - punk by numbers. Too clever.

The Damned, on the other hand, now that's a different matter. I saw them again about 7 years ago and they were still a mess but somehow you just had to keep watching to see where it all went next. Here they are at possibly their best (it still gives me goosebumps): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqviKTLx9PM Mr Scabies doesn't like his drums...

A friend of mine is thinking of buying this cool mini amp which has a whole bunch of effects in it but he was worried that he'd stop concentrating on learning how to play the guitar and instead just use distortion to cover his mistakes. I pointed out that there are many professional guitarists who use a lot of overdrive to cover their lack of talent so he shouldn't worry too much about it. It was at that point I thought about The Edge!

Have you seen Bill Bailey's take off of The Edge? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4u6Eeb0YrKY

Actually, speaking of Bill Bailey's musical parodies, I've just found this slab of wonderment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHdM07pLtVY

"And now, the weather!" The man's a genius. Bound to say so, don't you know.
