I think Mr Lewis is quite right when he says:

Perhaps the old, old days weren't quite as angelic as we make out.

I fail to see how it can be more offensive to use swear words in an act (in an appropriate venue) than it is to call someone you've never met a
poor little rich slut

The point that something has been
taught and stood by for generations
does not make it correct forever. For generations, people thought the world was flat. My opinion is no more or less valid than anyone else's opinion. The fact is that people have differing views and we will never be able to convince each other otherwise.

I think we're going round in circles here - the answer that I am happiest with is "It Depends".

cheers,

Sean

I presume you're being deliberately obtuse for comedic effect, but I'll bite :-)

You mean apart from the ancient Greeks, early Egyptians and the Mesopotamians? The Hebrew Bible described a flat earth with a solid roof, surrounded by water above and below.

And let's not forget the Flat Earth Society existed (officially) until it's founder Charles Johnson died in 2001!

I thought that the earth WAS flat! My goodness! You learn something new every day on Talk Magic.

There is NO appropriate venue for a magician to swear. He is a MAGICIAN and it is his responsiblity to represent his art in a respectable manner. If he wishes to perform in low class venues for low class people and represent himself as a low class person then he should stick to being a "comedian".

It is indeed tasteless to refer to someone as a "poor little rich slut" but two wrongs don't make a right. Swearing on stage is offensive and a mark of the lazy and untalented.

Anyone that advocates such a disgusting philosophy has no right to call themselves a MAGICIAN.
