NLP?

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

It's a very "iffy" mode of operation and even viewed with strong skepticism within the majority of intellectual circles... and it really isn't how Derren Brown creates all of his miracles, it's a presentation line such as calling what I do "Telepathy"

Derren Brown has never uttered the words NLP, except maybe to say "I never say that I use NLP" :)

And yet he's one of the first personalities people mention in tandem to the term

I've noticed that he dislikes being associated with anything that he actually does (mentalism, magic, NLP, being British, etc.). Ok, I made the last one up. :P

Not sure why he does that, especially given Craig's statement above (or maybe because of?). Anyway, I second "Frogs into Princes" and 'Introducing NLP' by Joseph O'Connor & John Seymour. I believe the former is easy enough to find if you watch ebay and Amazon, although the prices seem to have gotten out of control lately.

Aha,

Well NLP is sort of a weird version of hypnosis.

You may do well to study more traditional forms of hypnosis inductions etc before moving to the vague language patterns of NLP.

<refrains from NLP presupposition>

Has anyone actually got a clip of video where Derren Brown actually states himself that he's using NLP?

He does admit to using the eye accessing cues from NLP but that's all I can recall off the top of my head.

I'll have to do some research.

Has he even said that? I only ever remember him asking people to take off their shades and hats

"People who hail from Manchester cannot possibly be upper class and therefore should not use silly pretentious words"

He said it in a print interview if memory serves...

Or a quick radio interview I'm tracking it down :)

He obviously DOES use NLP as indicated by the Simone Pegg video now of course while he used NLP he may have had some other way to influence Simon and NLP was just his cover because it was quite obvious.

I think that what some magicians remember is that the Tricks of the Mind book discusses (and largely slags off) NLP. It's tempting to read the appropriate chapter(s) as being a performance method but, if you read a second time (knowing that DB is a magician and a master misdirector to boot), you'll notice that he never actually claims to use it. I see that book as being part of his misdirection career, actually.

I think you are spot on there. And I think its a genius move, if some lay person reads it and goes "No no no, I read his book and he says he doesn't use such and such techniques!" then it adds to his mystique.

Sorry, off-topic a bit there.

I'm unclear - do you think he used NLP for the Pegg/Bike thing? :D

I very much doubt it personally!

I agree Tricks of the Mind was more about misleading the general public than any form of disclosure about how anything Derren does is really achieved.

No it was in there.

I mean the techniques were in there right. He used pattern breaks and associated anchor words.

Things like, "I biked that movie a lot." rather than "I liked.' etc.

I just said it was obvious that he was doing it so that he must have been using that to cover what he was really doing.

Asking Simon backstage to write something other than bike and pick bike ;)

At least with my skillset that i what I would have had to do.

Well are you saying he wasn't using NLP there?

My knowledge of NLP is limited to surface stuff so I could probably be fooled by something that looked similar.
