Coin magic

Postby flaw07 » Jan 13th, '10, 15:19

Pretty sure I'm posting in the wrong forum, so Mods feel free to move it.

So I'm considering giving coin magic a go. I wrestle with a guy who does a magic show regularly and he advised me to look into coin magic because it can be done pretty much at any whim and is less conspicuous in peoples minds than cards. So I found this, I know how people here feel about E, but on the basis of no gaffs is it a decent package. Or better yet, where can I find a better collection at a decent price?

hmmm.

Dont touch this with a barge pole.

His matrix,is blindingly obvious, his handling of the clink pass is awfull, and several of the moves are clearly highly angle sensitive. What's left , is reasonably standard fare.

If you want to get into coins, Start by reading Bobo, then maybe look into the coin dvds that Craig Petty has out .

I'd go with Bobo too, a very good way to get you going and unless you want to get really serious, probabaly just about all you'll need.

I thought the DVD looked slick..As with E products, the adverts are very well made, studio quality, however price per effect is high. Plus it mentions on the blurb something most unusual for an instructional DVD "Ponta the Smith doesnt speak". Take from that what you will...

I would second the advice about getting Bobo's though. I think I picked mine up on amazon for £2ish and has served me fine.

If your the kind that works well through video as opposed to books, then David Roth is the man to look at in my opinion. A quick google search and bit f research should point you in the direction of something suitable quite easily.

Sankey has some good coin effects.
If you can do killer effects with a normal deck that is examined and shuffled, what is there to worry about?

If memory serves Bobo is on The Learned Pig if you're a member.

That was one of the strangest sentences i've typed.

To be honest, I'm only really wanting just a small sampling of coin magic I can do in the event I don't have any cards handy.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. I"ll be certain to track some of these down.

Have you looked in Mark Wilson's book, there's a nice little coin section in there.

I wouldn't have thought so, since it's still under copyright. I can't check for sure right now, as I'm not on my own computer and can't remember the password offhand.

Surprisingly enough, it is. :)

Modern Coin Manipulation by T.N. Downs is there as well.

More than enough to get you started, though seriously, before downloading invest in the book. It's not that expensive, and it will serve you well for the rest of your life. :)

Hugards money magic is there too.

Ha! Surprised. Marko must have got permission.

But you're right, too, in saying the book is so cheap it might as well be on your shelf. I got a secondhand copy (in like-new condition) from Amazon Marketplace for well under a fiver.

I do believe that Ponta the Smith is one of the smoothest I've seen. On the other hand, his routines are not the best version I've seen as well. However, when he performs it, it looks sooooo amazing. The problem is, we wont be having his skills included in the DVD.
