routine assistance

Postby jackleg » Feb 18th, '10, 23:42

Hey!

I'm begining work on a stage routine for my magic club annual stage romp in October and I'm looking for some Suppport&/or Tips...

I'm looking at doing a performance type off show rather than a presentation (if that makes sense)

Imagine the stage has a park bench and a litter bin (as a receptical/table/bin)
I'm playing the role of a tramp.
I have the finale sorted but what I'm looking for your help with are some tricks that can be included in the routine.
I was playing with the idea of rubbish from the bin "becoming" a banquet in various ways....

Any thoughts on this would as always be greatly appreciated.

Just thinking off the top of my head here, but maybe taking bits of torn newspaper from the bin and restoring them :) Or perhaps Healed and sealed :)

yep was going down a similar thought process:- No tear T&R for a nice checker table cloth, perhaps even a splash production with a paper bag for a bottle of wine, an appearing candle... a whole meal dream scene.
And thanks for the suggestions! keep 'em coming. :D

Vanishing coke bottle in a brown paper bag... sort of trash related.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

How about you pull a pizza box out of the rubbish and then produce a series of improbable sized objects from it like in Robert-Houdin's Portfolio. It would take some constructing though but if you've got until October you could maybe have a go at it. It could be a nice modern take on the old classic.

This I love the idea of! Inspired thank you. Now - any suggestions where to start looking for method? I once made up a bowling ball from slimline briefcase effect is it similar?
I'm a big fan of books so any pointers would be great.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far! I genuinly appreciate them all (even if I don't use them all) Please feel free to keep the ideas flowing!

You'll be wanting the Secrets of Stage Conjuring by Robert-Houdin available from Amazon and all other good retail outlets. It goes into full detail along with explanations of loads of his other stage illusions. Even if you never use anything from it, it's a lovely book and pretty cheap.

well, Houdins Portfolio, involves a somewhat Complex Masking technique, so you would have to bring in a full set of drapes, have a tight rein on the lighting, and find a reason for putting an empty pizza box onto a stand. Your not able to walk about with it.
Oh, and his effect also used a full stage trap, for his final production of Emille, His son. :)

Im just sitting here thinking how popular the tramp and park bench theme has been over the years.
Even Paul Daniels featured in on his show. It's on Youtube somewhere, with He and Debbie singing couple of swells, as he performs Organ pipes, and some other effects,, to preduce a full banquet.

If your after inspiration, i strongly urge you to search that clip out.. Its got almost every effect that you can fit into such a routine in it.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

Make a change bag out of bin liners, show it empty and then produce whatever else you need to perform.

I find it amaing that no one has suggestyed Airborne, with a wine bottle.
If you wished, you could even produce it, a la Bob Read.

At first I thought you were asking for assistance on a regular basis.

Now this sounds great! I love that you are doing a theatrical performance, and that you pointed that out. Far too many people these days just try to show off something without any sort of theater, and it would be great to see a comeback of theatrical performances of magic.

Now then, as for what you might do.

The first thing that came to my mind was the idea of doing a torn and restored newspaper. Thinking of other things that one might come across in a litter bin, I recalled a certain restored soda can I once saw. It appears crushed and empty, but is restored to full and fine condition. I'm not neccessarily going to recommend it, as I never bought it myself. However, it did come to mind as something that would work well in such a routine.

There you have a link to look at it.

You could, in fact, make a theme out of things being restored. There are tons of effects that focus around this idea. You could just be going through the rubbish, and restoring object after object.

Keep up with the theater side of magic performing.

Best Regards,

-Ben

You could do some coin magic with change.
You could have a folded up brown bag and unfold it and from inside it pull out a bottle.
