From "Psychic Self-Defence" by Dion Fortune:

There is a curious phenomenon known to occultists as the astral bell; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle makes use of it in one of his Sherlock Holmes stories.

This sound varies from a clear, bell-like note to a faint click. I have often heard it resemble the sound made by striking a cracked wine-glass with a knife-blade.

It commonly announces the advent of an entity that is barely able to manifest, and need not necessarily be a herald of evil at all. It may simply be a knock on the door of the physical world to attract the attention of the inhabitants to the presence of one who stands without and would speak with them.

I recently had the pleasure of seeing this in play first hand.
It had quite an amazing effect on those who witnissed it.

however, as a sugestion, if you intend to perform this in a dark room, it is probably a good idea to cover it with a clear dome of some kind.

this would add more credence to it being a spirit, over more manual means.

and dont over do it.

Once or twice is enough.

I would also suggest that the bulb is way to bright.

it needs to be dulled down a bit, so it glows, rather than brightly flashes.

Covering it with a glass bowl or something is a good idea. And yes, it would be ace if there were bulbs available that took a while to warm up (or something) so one just got a dull glow rather than the sudden burst of brightness which completely lit up the room and blinded a few people!

It was interesting to see people's responses though. Different people reporting seeing different coloured light for instance.

I think you should be able to dull the bulb by applying a small amount of varnish to the outside.
or, use a battery that's on its last legs.

should be able to wire in a device to reduce the power to the bulb...a Tomo-esque solution methinks

Hi all
I think the idea of the glowing bulb is great and ill look into this in the future, Also for your information.
All the orders went out Friday, Saturday and Monday. Anyone that bought one will have received an email stating postage had taken place (if not check spam/trash folders). Sorry for any delay, we had been away, and have worked flat out to get them all sorted and out to you.
Kindest regards
Simon

Glad to say that my lamp arrived this morning and it's a beaut! Spirit Lamp is very easy to use and is totally under your control at all times, the spec can actually install the battery and the bulb as proof that everything is innocent (of course it is  !). The working literally goes like a dream - a few minute's practice and I was operating the gizmo almost subconsciously.

Warstone Cemetery, as mentioned in the routine, is well within easy reach and I'm tempted to take the lamp there and see what the reactions are from any of the living passers by...

Construction is excellent but the thing which really, really impressed me (I'm a bit of a stickler for this sort of thing) is that there are five cross slot brass screws used to hold the battery casing and the bulb holder. All five were perfectly aligned with the slots left to right rather than in any haphazard arrangement. To me, that's a sign of very high standards and care in workmanship so thank you Simon. I'm only sorry I'm going on hols tomorrow so won't be able to really give this a proper trial until the end of the month, if only these cheapo airlines would give a bit more baggage allowance I’d have taken it with me!

In the meantime I’ve found a very nice box, very much like a miniature treasure chest, to put the lamp in and, with a bit of antiquing etc, it'll all look and work rather well....

Received mine this morning and like everyone else was very impressed. If anyone has any ideas on antiquing it I'd be grateful to hear about it.

I posted this over in the green place, but hopefully it's OK to post here too as I feel it's worth repeating:

Mine arrived this morning, safe and secure by recorded delivery.

I've gotta say that I really don't know how Simon is sending these out at the price. Not only was there the unit itself (every bit as good as mentioned in earlier posts) the thing to make it work and several A4 pages of instructions/seance tips, but there was also a spare bulb and suprisingly the 9volt battery included as well! In a field where we're increasingly teased with high-tech, highly desirable, but necessarily pricey props this is a real steal.

I must also mention Simon's service. At every stage from the moment I placed the order he was in touch letting me know the score. He also took a last minute request to change mine for a darker model completely in his stride.

This really has been one of those purchases that has been a pleasure on every level. On the strength of this, Unleash Your Dreams is definately a company to watch out for in the future.

:D
