Shop Opening Times

themagicwand wrote:My experience is that sporadic opening times is the start of a slippery slope. It's certainly gives the impression of an owner who's sort of given up and thinks "what's the point of opening, no-one ever comes in". I really hope this isn't the case and that this was a one-off. Imagine the guy's disappointment at missing out on the moolah burning a hole in your pocket!!

By the way, I once owned a record shop and eventually stopped opening because no-one came in and I couldn't face another 8 hours sat in a shop on my own (this was pre-wasting time on the internet, although I did have a wireless if I remember correctly). Trouble is, if you don't open up you can be assured that no-one will be shopping with you!

Hi! this is Mike Danata in Bournemouth, it has been very quiet over the last few weeks, with very few people calling in, & those that do are very focused as to what they want, they come in & say "All I want is some cards" (or whatever) "Don't show me anything else, because I'll want it, & I can't afford it at the moment" so I sell a few packs of cards (or whatever) & off they go! So I can understand some people not wanting to bother to open, I feel that way myself sometimes!
I still open 7 hours a day though, & I have TONS of stock!!!

So come to Bournemouth!!!

All the best!

Mike

I have also found this shop closed when I visited. I was in Brighton yesterday visiting my daughter and had decided to go and have a look and also to buy some sponge balls (ok very small beer) as I lost one of mine last Sunday.

I found a parking space close to the shop, paid £1.60 for an hours parking and found the shop was closed. The notice on the door said it would open at five past one (???) but didn't.

Won't bother again.

that will be the same sign that kept me coming back too! looks like shop keep hasn't been back for a few days. I hope he's ok? does anyone know him/her?

My partner however suspects it may be a money laundering front. I'll have to educate her in magic retail and how the phrase "thats the magic shop owners porche" is seldom heard.

Mike I'm sorry I didn't know of your shop. Next time.

When you do get to Bournemouth and find Mikes shop you will find yourself in an Aladdins Cave of magic. The shop is full of effects, he has store rooms full of effects and the best thing about getting to a bricks and mortar shop is that you get to talk to somebody, in this case a very experienced and knowledgable magician.

The only drawback is that if you go in with a budget to spend you will spend it .... and some. The temptations are overwhelming!

As it turns out the lovely Mike supplied the small spotty faced teenage magician that I was, with my first ever illusion!

small (but happy) world :D

...Oh and has anyone heard of our long lost shop keep? the window lights were on I'm now worried he/she is involved in a tragic magic related incident

I popped into the Brighton shop yesterday afternoon - and it was very much open. My friend Dave who works there sometimes was around - always good to have a natter - and even to return a DVD of his that I had kept for four years! They seem to have a good range of stuff for a new shop - and I echo the cries of 'support your local shop'.

Thank goodness they're ok! It did indeed look to have some nice stock (what I could see through the window) but even the best stock in the world won't sell if the shop is shut...

I went the other week when visiting a friend at uni.

The bloke looked like a yob out of Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, was patronising and offensive and treated me like an idiot for daring the have the audacity to have breasts and be into magic.

The stock was not 'good' as people have said. It was the same old stuff everyone has, but more expensive.

My advice is unless you are a mockney gangster type not to bother.

YMMV

Brighton magic shop

Postby brightonmagicshop » Aug 31st, '10, 13:45

Well many thanks for the original "write up's" of my shop. I really appreciate the positive remarks and positive attempts of promoting the little shop.
Fortunnatelly i am a very busy man, and try my best juggling my time between my other businesses and my magic shop in Brighton. Unfortunnatelly how good i may be at my magic i cannot appear in two places at once.
This sometimes means that the shop has to be left closed. I recently had the pleasure of meeting a young fantastic magician who i frequently leave the shop in his responsibility. Which now allows us to be open 6 days a week.
As regards to "Sarah's" experience at my shop. I can only say that due to our popularity and uniqueness we attract many pretty woman into our shop and try to treat them with as much equal attention as possible. Neither myself or my staff remember you Sarah. If you ever get over your frightful experience and decide to return. I can assure you that we will have a fully stocked shop and our magicians will treat you fairly.
However if any of you would like to return i can assure you that the shop will have a better chance of being open throughout the week 12-5.30 , except Sunday's. Also as a small attempt to reconcile with any of our fellow magicians who have taken the time to visit our store, we can propose a 10% discount on your purchases if you mention talk magic.
Many thank's for reading my reply to this thread on my magic shop and hopefully get the time to personally meet every magician who visit's our shop.
Kind regards
Johnny
