A columnist in yesterday's Telegraph was talking about his terrier, which apparently had a fantastic knack for picking horses. They'd photocopy the race list from the newspaper, suitably enlarged, put a bit of food next to each horse, and whichever the dog ate first was deemed to be his pick.

Funnily enough, although he had excellent results with horses, he couldn't predict anything else. Lottery, dog racing, elections -- lousy at them all. The lesson for the octopus is "stick with what you know".

Apparently the opctopus is now in intensve care after being found at the bottom of his tank in wheezy hysterics, almost unable to breath, his eyes watering uncontrollably and he was repeatedly slapping four of his thighs with the other four limbs. It seems that someone asked him what the chances were of Birmingham City winning the Premiership this season.....

Can I point out that for every prediction the octopus has made, he has gone to the tank on the right.

Mystery solved.

I, in fact, decided to take advantage of my recent reread of the 13 steps, and predicted the result. In a sealed envelope that was on view (and a good distance from me) the whole time!

So... it's the psychic octopus-keeper who instinctively knows which box to put on the right. Still impressive.
