Psychedelic magic

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

thanks for all your replies so far

I've looked a bit closer into card manipulation as this video seems to be the closest to the kind of idea I want: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FAuJbpL1uo ... it even has orchestral psychedelic trance music in.

obviously I'd never reach his skill level even if I practiced hardcore for the next few years, but it's something to aspire to.

Anyway I've come up with some issues with manipulation:
  • Multicoloured cards would be pretty expensive for me to be throwing around everywhere... these are the cheapest I can find http://www.magicbox.uk.com/multi-colour ... brick.html but then I have white border issues which show up in the darkness probably
  • Would I do manipulation at the beginning or the end of a table routine? I'm thinking that the end would be better (I'd prefer not to do magic in a rave environment, I'd start out with a more private performance level where I can control the lighting, music and angles etc)

The Regal Color-Changing Deck starts as a normal deck. Then through the power of Abracadabra, the backs change from red to blue or (vise versa) and the suits swap colors- spades and clubs turn red, hearts and diamonds turn black. I wouldn't call it "psychedelic" by any means but it is color changing.

I used to be a club DJ (rave DJ to the Americans) and I used to love walking about the darkened corners where people were resting and doing purely visual magic.

I made my own UV silk and did the usual Silk appearance combined with the D'Lites. I also Painted the colour changing casino chips in UV paint so that added to a big reveal on those.

IAIN wrote:so basically, rave equals sticking a bit of day-glo onto normal magic props and doing the same...

whereas if you research the history of what psychedelia was/is - you'll get something faaaaaaaar more interesting...

huxley was friends with milton erikson as an example...

Another Huxley fan!! :P 8)

But the thing is, you can't just replicate psychedelia with Colours. In the same way you can't just make psychedelic rock by just creating strange droning sounds. It has to relate somehow to the psychedelic experience- listen to the Beatles as a perfect example; 'Nothing is real.. Strawberry fields' or I am the Walrus 'I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together' which makes sense if you know about psychedlics.. the same holds lyrically for Blue Jay Way, Within without you, Tommorow never knows (Brilliant song!!)... and several others. However, Yellow Submarine and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.. well, there isn't too much philosophy in that in all honesty. Finally, do not mistake Psychedelic aphorism for Ecstacy. Ecstacy is the one where everyone thinks what they are saying is very philosophical but it actually isn't.

Ps I always feel sorry for neurotic people who watch those kinds of acts. OCDs beware!

heavy water experiment are probably the closest to modern day psychedelia you'll get...with a bit of seattle sub-popness added in...

Hello again everybody

can anyone tell me the name of those objects (or tell me where I can get them, or learn to make them) that I often see manipulators use, where you can produce several between the fingertips (1:40 at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RKC_6PV_Zo). I know how it's done but my attempts today at making my own were not very successful

thinking of doing that with several multicoloured sponge balls

EDIT: found out a product (goshman multiplying sponge balls) where this can be done, however if I purchased it could I use it with several multicoloured balls (one of which is red obviously)?

thanks

you can make your own sponge balls easily, you're only limited by the colours of sponges you find :)

Derango, the classic effect is called multiplying billiard balls, although the props used are often a lot smaller than real snooker or billiard balls.

Theoretically, you could use different coloured balls, but this would rather spoil the illusion, and possibly help reveal the method. Also, the Goshman version uses sponges that are quite firm (firmer even than the Goshman non-supersoft sponge balls), so sourcing different coloured replacements might be hard.

While it's not the sort of magic I do these days, I undestand that Fakini balls are highly regarded for this trick, and they come in a range of colours (but they are pretty expensive).

Incidentally, I don't think Florian Zimmer is using the classic method, but a way of having many balls appear at once. A similar approach is sometimes used to double the four billiard balls the magician has produced in one hand using the "classic" method by a further four suddenly appearing in his other hand.

Blimey, this is a bit of a Bingo-fest.

many moons ago, and perhaps under this moon there was/is such a thing as psychadelic disks, There were a little larger than a half dollar, quite thin, great for the misers dream and other coin manip type stuff. They were horribly tacky looking so they should probably fit the bill provided you can still find them.

Don't know if Derango still lurks here or not but this may be of use to anyone who searches the theme in the future.

I stumbled across this while looking for something else entirely and thought of this post. This is Jeff McBride's Revolution:

There is a vid demonstration at the link. This is Dancing Canes... on acid. I wouldn't be surprised if the well funded, chain owned dance clubs/discos that hire dancers (the non-stripping kind ) would hire this kind of act on a regular basis.
