I have the original Colin Gilbert Linking Polo. It is a very well made gimmick. Using it you could link together (say) a polo, and rubber band, and a borrowed wedding ring.

I agree that a principle for doing this effect may be commonly known to anyone interested in magic (and maybe even a few who are not), however in this case, I feel that you are paying for more than just a principle, as the item received is both well made and more funtional than the DIY version.

I doubt that anyone buying this would feel particularly p'ed off...
