Postby highspeed4 » Sep 26th, '04, 16:32

Hello

Glad ive found this forum.Im just starting today to learn card magic ,ive brought bicycle cards.

Is there any advice or videos on differnet shuffling techniques before a trick.I know the normal shuffle with 2 hands.I would like to learn the shuffle where all cards go through each other like Jay sankey for presentation. Is there any other techniques which look good?

Thanks for any advice offered

Got to agree with Tom... Although the book may not make you look flashy instantly - you'll need patience and practice for that - it'll give you such a solid grounding with your deck of Bikes after just the first chapter.

Good luck, and welcome to our ever-expanding world.

Personally, I'd recommend Oz Pearlman's 'born to perform CARD MAGIC' DVD.

The first section teaches some of the fundementals of card magic as well as a number of controls, forces and flourishes. All build up into four killer routines and I'd recommend this for a beginner as well as the more advanced.

You can get this through Penguin Magic

The first three volumes of Daryl's Encyclopedia of card sleights contain quite a few shuffles.
Books on card magic are much more affordable, but i find them harder to learn from (some people swear by books, but I find videos much easier to learn from).

When I first started (about 8 months or so ago) my first purchase was indeed Royal Road..

However I found it quite difficult to get the hang of the sleights from the book and so bought Kaufman's Basic Card Techniques DVD. This DVD will give you a good idea of how to perform the majority of basic sleights and makes a good visual companion (although there are no tricks included to show you how to use them).

Daryls DVDs (Encyclopedia of card sleights) are also excellent but maybe a bit daunting to someone starting out, not because they are complicated or difficult to follow, in fact they are absolutely brilliant, but just because of the sheer number of things covered. however I would suggest getting them if your serious about cards as they are truely a visual encyclopedia.

When you've practiced a bit and got some of the moves down then visit UltimateMagic.com and download some free trick instructions just so that you realise how much you are progressing. I found that I got a bit lost at first just practicing the moves and not knowing any tricks.. (I got a bit directionless basically) but when you try some and get them it makes all the difference to the practice, practice, practice.
