When I first started (about 8 months or so ago) my first purchase was indeed Royal Road..
However I found it quite difficult to get the hang of the sleights from the book and so bought Kaufman's Basic Card Techniques DVD. This DVD will give you a good idea of how to perform the majority of basic sleights and makes a good visual companion (although there are no tricks included to show you how to use them).
Daryls DVDs (Encyclopedia of card sleights) are also excellent but maybe a bit daunting to someone starting out, not because they are complicated or difficult to follow, in fact they are absolutely brilliant, but just because of the sheer number of things covered. however I would suggest getting them if your serious about cards as they are truely a visual encyclopedia.
When you've practiced a bit and got some of the moves down then visit UltimateMagic.com and download some free trick instructions just so that you realise how much you are progressing. I found that I got a bit lost at first just practicing the moves and not knowing any tricks.. (I got a bit directionless basically) but when you try some and get them it makes all the difference to the practice, practice, practice.
