Classic Palm (Learning to make it look natural)

Postby ijamo » Aug 12th, '11, 23:24

I am beginning to learn the Classic Palm. I have it looking okay at this moment in time, but I'm having trouble with my thumb. I can move my fingers freely and hold objects like pens and coins, but I have trouble making my thumb look natural (It tends to look to straight, and I have trouble bending it into a better looking position.

Anybody have any tips/tricks?
Also any exercises or DVDs I could purchase that would help? (I already have "In the Beginning There Were Coins by Jay Noblezada")

Thanks in advance,
iJamo.

Anything sleight of hand related is dependant upon one thing. The muscles.
Your muscles need to know how to do something, and also be strong enough to be able to do it. In the natural course of your life, you have not exercised the muscles needed in order to make a classic palm look natural. As it stands right now, they are not strong enough to grip the coin in place while they are positioned where they are when your hand is held naturally.

An athlete is as good at what they do not because their body naturally knows how to run fast, or throw a javelin far, but because they worked the specific groups of muscles so that a) they were strong enough, and b) so they could work in conjunction with each other.

The only way to get your clasic palm looking natural is to keep on doing it, and doing it, and doing it, and doing it. Keep gripping a coin there for long times, to really work those muscles. It's going to take time.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Jason england - Palming Fundamentals is for card palming, I'm looking for the Classic Coin Palm. - Sorry I didn't specify.

Do you know any exercises that could help speed up the development of the muscles? Or is it simply best to just keep doing the palm?

Just keep at it, try holding a coin in the palm during everyday life, when you're out, when you're at work. You'll find that it'll get easier and more natural in no time.

When you've mastered one coin, you can then try moving on to smaller ones.

There's some good advice on palm coining at http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic38850.php&highlight=

Try different sizes of coin. I can palm any size but large ones - old pennies - are the easiest and most natural looking for me.

Moisturiser is helpful too if your skin is as dry as mine. Someone on another forum suggested glycerine, which you can get in small bottles from the cake-making aisle of a supermarket. A tiny drop is enough for both hands.

Just goes to show you, I'm can silver dollars, half dollars, english pennies. When I start running into the smaller coins, quarters on down I run into trouble and switch with finger palming.

Practice and experiment. Just keep at it and it will all work out.
