There are those that publish stuff from their working repertoire, material which is solid and perfected and there are those that have never tried their stuff out and put every brain burp into a PDF. Often this is not just for money, it's for ego reasons, kudos and they believe it makes them more "important" in the magic world.

People may recall the Canadian child a few years ago who was after approval and fame and released e-books full of impractical or plagiarised material and lecture notes from a non existent lecture.
There's also the kids performer turned mentalist turned bizzarist who despite only performing for his two mates down the pub professes himself to be an expert and churns out impractical material at a rate of knots.

These material plopped out by these types of people is the stuff to avoid.

To be fair, people like this are still few and far between, and they give up quickly when the easy cash never materialises. It's been my experience that new producers are incredibly reticent about even showing their work-in-progress to people, and do get a lot of eyeball time from others. It's usually the people they ask for advice that convince them whether they're ready to publish or not rather than their egos.

This comment does not apply to genuinely creative people who are coming up with original stuff. That is a different creative process.

I just wanted to add, that the reason why most magicians fail is not due to lack of talent, but lack of business sense. The problem is that they don't realize the reason why they failed and the love of magic is strong they are desperate to make money off of it somehow in hopes of being able to leave their regular job. So many try to come up with ways to become a dealer or start marketing their 'own' stuff.

The problem is they fail again because they have not taken care of the original problem. They lack business sense. In the first case they blame everyone but themselves, they blame youtube, exposure, peoples changing belief system. In the second place they blame the market. Of course I'm speaking in general terms, but it is pretty much the way of things.

Then there is the problem of certain magic shops that will remain nameless. in which case they claim high end products but really they purchase Knock offs and charge original prices. And the knock offs are not nearly as good, and then you have magicians on magic forums believing that there is too much garbage on the market thinking it is the creator or the manufacturer that is putting out such garbage, when it is not, it is those who think they can make it better and cheaper, or at least cheaper. The Kennedy card box, where the card is found folded up in the beautiful wooden box is a prime example. Originally it sold for 90 dollars US. And is worth every penny. Of course it was knocked off and sold for about 45 dollars and was worth about 3 dollars. But those who bought it were so disgusted with it, but they didn't realize they had purchased a knock off and now may think Kennedy puts out poor quality stuff. (I assure you Kenney has some of the nicest stuff around).

And it all ends up littering the market. But I'm thinking that is true of most industry.
