I think you can actually, or there is some trick. DON'T TRY IT THOUGH - ask somebody experienced.

It burns very fast and so would not transfer a huge amount of heat into your fingers. This means that, apart from a sharp sting it is unlikely to seriously injure you. Note that I am saying unlikely here, it is not impossible that it will burn you and it is also not advisable to do this unless you have a large amount of experience and fairly tough fingers. You would be better off trying to get hold of some of the pots that are on the market to burn it in, many come with strikers attached.

Note, just in case anyone is confused here and thinks burning things in your hand is a good idea, it is not. Just because it might not be dangerous in an ideal world doesn't mean you should do it. If you have a defective batch of flash paper it is perfectly possible that it will burn for considerably longer, it will also be a lot hotter than ordinary paper due to the nitrocellulose in it so could result in injury, please don't actually burn it in your hands.

The first time that I got hold of some flash paper I was far less experienced than I am now.

I lit a piece in my hand, about the side of two postage stamps and boy was it hot

It may not burn for long but by definition, if it's burning them it's hot! Fortunately there was no lasting damage and the burn was sore for a few hours but repetative use in your bare hand, and without precaution is not recommended.

There are little metal cans which can be concealed in your hands. The flash paper/cotton is put inside and lit with a striker. It will protect your hand from the effect as well as providing a simple means of getting hold of it and an invisible way to light it.

Much easier and safer to do if the paper is really well dried at first, once had a piece stuck to my thumb whilst it burned away. It hurt. A LOT!

For an 'in the hand' flash I built myself a small gadget from an easily available everyday item. I hadn't seen one before and invented it myself, although I'm sure that someone else has come up with it and maybe its available retail although I've never seen it. It uses wool and not paper and will take 10 minutes to make with everyday DIY tools. I used my Leatherman Wave. Total cost, 10p (flash wool excluded).

I've no intention of marketing it so if anyone wants to know how to make one PM me. Mods, if I'm out of order please delete the post or PM me. If you want me to post it somewhere else on the forum that's OK too.

And, in answer to the original question, its a lot less painful to burn a bit of flash wool in the hand than it is paper.

There is no problem that I can see with your post.
