Sorry, I don't think I made myself clear. What I meant was that gif is good for limited pallet images, so cartoon style things with relatively small numbers of colours, often in large blocks are what gif is best at. JPG tends to work best at compressing images with a very large (near infinite) colour pallet like photographs.
Of course if you want animations then gif is the only way to go really, however many colours you have.
