Talking about Magic

Just curious with this, thought a poll might be interesting - but how do you introduce your magic? People say that ideally you should NOT call them tricks as it just reminds people that there's nothing magical about your magic - it's just a trick, wheras on the otherhand a lot of magicians I've seen, both out and about and on TV, do refer to their magic as a trick. This is not a question of which is right or not, but what you say. Personally I avoid the word 'trick' and use 'experiment' or 'something interesting/unusual' etc.

It really does depend on what I'm doing.

If I'm performing a card or money routine then I will probably introduce it as a trick unless it's going towards a mentalism type of routine and then I leave the spec to make up their own mind. I think that most people that I perform to assocaite tricks with money and / or cards or vice versa anyway.

If I'm doing something with a piece or rope then I never use the work trick and I tend to use the word mysterious, concentrating on the effect that you're trying to create for the spec. It's also similar with fork bending which I find if performed right, is very mysetious anyway, so I never refer to it as a trick and again, leave the specs to make up their own mond.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!
