You have it wrong, I'm afraid.

If people didn't put their own twists on magic, which includes putting their PERSONALITY into them, it would be boring.

To rephrase that, when a trick hasn't got a persons own twist, even if it is just a change in the patter, it is a trick.

When you put some of YOU into it, you can make it a routine, giving a PERFORMANCE, not just a carbon copy of everyone else.

Why do you think people have new ideas?
To keep magic moving on and staying interesting for the audience.

To me, magic is a way to lighten up and just let yourself go a bit.

Nothing's more rewarding than going down the pub, finding someone who's obviously had a rough day and showing them a magic trick or two.
Ham it up a bit, add some humour to your patter, and then just do the trick.
Even the ambitious card routine... its not really magic because people know that it's physically impossible for a card to go from the middle of the deck to the top. But they don't care.
They can't figure it out, your patter makes them laugh, and you walk away feeling accomplished and they have a smile (or a bewildered look) on their face.

After all, the important part is not how the trick is done, but how we do it.
And that sums up what magic means to all of us.

Fill it with flourishes and fancy moves... show off skills.
Make yourself seem a bit daft but humourous, and give them a glimpse of perhaps the worlds only remaining "real" magic

You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism
