The thing is, I don't feel comfortable having to hold a break... it looks too weird (I think) just having to lift up a corner of a card to get it to turnover.
Also, I'm thinking of maybe using one to show somewhere that I failed to bring the card back to the top (eg after a backslip) but that would probabl;y work better as the spectator is more focused on the fact you got it wrong than what you're doing with your hands. Obviously after that, a qucick click of the fingers, single lift, show, backslip to bury the indifferent card...
First, I would definitely recommend Born To Perform - it gives a good AC routine and very good teaching of a DL. I notice that a lot of people just learning DLs tend to turn the card over at the very bottom corner - it's alright but it doesn't really look natural. I thought that was your choice as a way to turn over the card but you definitely don't have to if you don't want to.
When one holds a break one usually holds the deck down with the other fingers so as to conceal the break from the front. This is alright IMHO but the problem is that a) it bends up the bottom corner of the card quite a bit which definitely looks strange, and b) it means that you have to a DL from the bottom corner of the card which is rather unnatural. Personally, I prefer to release the card with my ring finger so that it separates from the deck all down the side - it's more angly but it looks better. (I hope that's comprehensible.) If you do that it's fairly easy to turn over the card from the side instead of from the front.
The other option is to learn a strike DL. This is a DL that doesn't require a get-ready at all, the lift is done in the same motion as the DL. It's rather harder to do well but it means that you can do a DL straight from a deck, and you don't have to worry about breaks so much. Of course, if you can get a break, you might as well.
I hope that doesn't sound like meaningless rubbish.
