Ambitious card

Postby EckoZero » Mar 28th, '06, 02:43

Just a quick question, I couldn't find anything like this on the search and didn't know where else to put it so I put it here...

All the Ambitious Card routines I've seen use DLs frequently.
I'm not so great on the DL at the moment so I don't use it all in the trick.

Does anyone else do an ambitious card with no DL?

If anyone wants to PM me and share ideas or just comment on the question then please feel free :)

You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism

Seriously? You couldnt' have watched alot of ACRs as there alot of of examples and moves that doesn't use DLs. In my new ACR routine, i think i am using ONE double, that that's it... maybe 2....

As Rune stated, there are a number of moves that can be used in place of a double. PM me some time and I'll give you a few resources to check into.

I agree wholeheartedly :D:D but Oz's ACR does use several DLs; in fact, there's only one move that doesn't!

I meant for the ACR, and also to learn the DL

True...

Ecko: although I guess it would be possible to do an entire ACR without a DL, it's really worth it to learn a simple DL. It's not very difficult (though not easy either), it just needs a few hours of practice and some videocamera work to get it to look convincing. Make sure that your DL looks the same as the regular DL, and don't worry too much about it - remember, the specs don't know what you're going to do!

Do you know how hard it is to type without putting in the spaces? They seem to go in automatically!

ecko, im unclear when you say u r not so great on the DL at the moment do you mean that you have problems doing the DL or that you don't like doing them?
There are other ways of getting the card to the top but none of them that spring to the mind are easier than the DL its the simplest way and if you have problems with it you should focus your time on mastering it cos its a pretty universal tool.
If I'm wrong and you're saying you don't LIKE the DL then carry right on and investigate all the other ways, hell get really posey and master a good pass:)

I do pass, dl, change the card in their hand, let them put it in the middle of the deck, pass, palm, card to forehead. :D

It's not that I can't do the DL... in fact I performed my ACR for Kati last night and he said my DL technique was pretty good and if I was just doing it to some friends they wouldn't notice what was going on.
The thing is, I don't feel comfortable having to hold a break... it looks too weird (I think) just having to lift up a corner of a card to get it to turnover.

Also, I'm thinking of maybe using one to show somewhere that I failed to bring the card back to the top (eg after a backslip) but that would probabl;y work better as the spectator is more focused on the fact you got it wrong than what you're doing with your hands. Obviously after that, a qucick click of the fingers, single lift, show, backslip to bury the indifferent card...

And any ideas where I can learn a good pass?
I have RRTCM but the one in there is damned near impossible I think.
Although I could be reading it wrong

Its not taught brilliantly in RRTCM. There are various DVDs dedicated to the pass I have On the Pass which is good but only if you already know how to do a pass. Kauffman's DVD seems to get good reviews but I have never seen it so I can't comment.

Strangely two good resourses I think are Born To Perform even though Oz does not go into detail and 45 by Jay Sankey. Unforttunately to get a good pass there are a lot of fine points and I am yet to find anything which has them all on. Its mainly down to practice.

Cheers,

First, I would definitely recommend Born To Perform - it gives a good AC routine and very good teaching of a DL. I notice that a lot of people just learning DLs tend to turn the card over at the very bottom corner - it's alright but it doesn't really look natural. I thought that was your choice as a way to turn over the card but you definitely don't have to if you don't want to.

When one holds a break one usually holds the deck down with the other fingers so as to conceal the break from the front. This is alright IMHO but the problem is that a) it bends up the bottom corner of the card quite a bit which definitely looks strange, and b) it means that you have to a DL from the bottom corner of the card which is rather unnatural. Personally, I prefer to release the card with my ring finger so that it separates from the deck all down the side - it's more angly but it looks better. (I hope that's comprehensible.) If you do that it's fairly easy to turn over the card from the side instead of from the front.

The other option is to learn a strike DL. This is a DL that doesn't require a get-ready at all, the lift is done in the same motion as the DL. It's rather harder to do well but it means that you can do a DL straight from a deck, and you don't have to worry about breaks so much. Of course, if you can get a break, you might as well.

I hope that doesn't sound like meaningless rubbish.
