Who knows anything about computers?

Postby EckoZero » Mar 28th, '06, 21:18

Hi, just wondering if any computer geeks/people who know a lot can help me out here...

Me and my dad share the same internet connection, so obivously our IP is the same.
Now there's a host on a couple of websites that has beef with my dad, one's a radio station and one's a word game. I used to go on both.

That is until my dad was unfairly blocked by IP indefinitely.
In having the same IP as him... obviously this means I can't get on those 2 sites.

So if anyone knows anything about computers....

What exactly is an IP and how do websites log it/view it
How can I make my IP appear as something else? I've read into proxys and stuff but I can't seem to figure out how to use them...
And is there anyway to make my IP appear to change regularly?

Many thanks

Ecko

You're kind of stuck really.

There are many IP masking utilities, but unfortunately, some sites won't allow you access if your IP address is masked.

Key 'IP Masking' into google...

Thanks mate. I don't suppose you know how to "configure a proxy" do you? I have a program called ProxyWay but apparently it's not doing anything =S

Someone suggested I might need to "configure a proxy" but didn't know how

I assume you have a static IP address; that is, disconnecting and reconnecting to the Internet doesn't fix the problem? If you do have a static IP you may be able to ask your ISP for a new one - email them and see.

Yeah broadband so its just a static IP.
Although I don't know if completely unplugging the internet from teh wall would work lol

Might try it thought, that or asking the ISP for a new IP.
Got an IP masker - dunno if it works. Or what it shows up if something tries to log my IP. Any idea Seige?

Go to www.nothingupmysleeve.co.uk
I've got an IP scanner in effect.

If you're on broadband, chances are you're on a Dynamic IP, unless you requested a static (they usually charge you for the privilege).

Also, worth noting, unplugging the modem from the phone socket won't always get you a new IP address.

Plus, usually IP bans are on total IP 'pools'... i.e if your IP address is 123.123.123.123 then the ban will be on all IPs in the range 123.123.123.xxx. Usually, a service provider has a designated band of IP addresses, and the whole band will get blocked.

Drop into the NothingUpMySleeve site, and I'll give you an analysis, see if your masker is working.

You could also try this: http://www.showmyip.com/
(If I'm not online... this would be your best bet!)

If you have a home network router then I think you can set it to use a static IP address - go to http://192.168.0.1 or whatever the address of your router is and look through the settings. There should be a checkbox in there that lets you put static or dynamic in the IP settings.

This doesn't work Kati... your computer is identified by its address given to you by your ISP, not the one on your router.

Your internal IP addresses can be whatever you want, your external IP address must remain the one designated to you. There's no real control.

Oops, I should have thought of that. There's a mistake in the documentation of our router, they say ISP when they mean router. I think.

Well I got myself a nice IP Masker and went on showmyip.com... and I can safely say it works :D

It now shows the IP of Primedius, not my home oen so I can get tinto the websites the ban is on.

Thanks for all your help guys.
The only problem I have now is trying to find an IP Masker with a bigger bandwith allowance than 3 megabytes....

IP maskers are basically just allowing you access THROUGH their IP address.

You may struggle to find one which gives you big bandwidth I'm afraid!

I was speaking to a friend earlier who recommends Winnow Anonymous Proxy for this. You apparently get a choice of proxy servers, one of which you may find better than another.

Have a google around for it, it costs a few quid apparently, but the friend who told me about it is a net programmer, and he's under the impression it's rather good!

Intresting convo guys,

I was only speaking to a fellow Web Dev this morning about IP banning on a couple of sites that we run and how it can be a little in effective.

Because your ISP's tend to assign these IP pools you block one person you'll more than likely kick out a whole rack of other users, which can be a real bu**er.

The static IP on your address is a little bit of a bu**er, but i would imagine that you may not be on a static IP ... usualy a host will charge an additional fee for this kind of service so you can configure VPN's and such like.

With DHCP being what it is, you'll more than likely have a lease time on your IP, once that has expired you'll be issued with a new one, this could well be the same one you had previously, its just a gamble.

I'm glad you got this IP masking kit up and working though.

I think you'll find that alot of web dev's will start building in more comprehensive blocking methods in future, using cookies and all sorts of methods.

Hmm...one of the features of the Internet is that it's very anonymous. If I wanted I could hide my IP address and then there'd be no way of identifying me at all. (I think.) I mean, they can leave a cookie but I block a lot of cookies and I clean them out regularly...

Ya think  Your IP address is the least of your worries. If that were true, since most people are allocated dynamic addresses, we would all be safe as houses. Pick up a copy of The Art of Deception by Kevin Mitnick and find out just how weak most security systems actually are.
