I've done a lot of amature video editing over the last year and I would recommend Sony Movie Studio for a beginner. The interface is relatively intuitive. You place your video or image files on one line and audio files on another line and match them up. It has plenty of tool to add text and graphics. I found I could use it pretty good (meaning cuts, transitions, slow motion, fast motion, special effects after about 8 hours.
You might think that is a long time, but many other programs are much more complicated and will take you much longer.
Also ensure your computer can handle the program. When processing audio and visual files in conjuction with edits and graphics it can take a long time.
If you have Windows XP, the operating system comes with a built in movie editor call "Windows movie maker" It won't have all the bells and whistles as Soney Movie Studio, but it is also easy to maneuver and might save you some cash if you have XP.
